this did not detract from my enjoyment of the first
By TUCSON ROBERT
DEAL BREAKER is the first in Harlan Coben's new series staring sports agent Myron Bolitar. I must say I cheated a bit by reading two of the Bolitar series before the first. However, this did not detract from my enjoyment of the first. Bolitar, an ex-college and NBA standout switched to being a sports agent and part-time private eye after a crippling injury forced him to drop out of NBA competition. Harlan Coben, an accomplished and award-winning mystery writer ably develops believable plots with compelling characters. Myron Bolitar manifests humor, striking good looks and a magnetic personality that turns women's heads and makes men sit up and take notice. Myron's best friend and business partner, Windsor Horne Lockwood III, better known as, Win, is the wealthy intellect of the company who loves to kick ass and kill if necessary. The beautiful Esperanza, Myron's secretary, once women's national professional wrestling champion who fought under the name, Pocohontas, adds humor and organization to Myron's outer office. Myron lands his first big client, rookie quarterback, Christian Steele. All goes well until Steele's fiancee, Kathy Culver, turns up missing. When no trace of her is found after 18 months she is presumed dead and law enforcement stops looking. Enters the gorgeous and charming Jessica Culver, Kathy's older sister and Myron's former live-in girlfriend. Jessica convinces Myron to help locate her little sister who she believes is still alive. Soon the sisters' father, and Kathy's ex-roommate turn up dead. The story is a multi-plotted page turner that keeps the reader on his toes. The ending is typical Coben—lengthy and perplexing. Deal Breaker is an action packed great starter for the Bolitar series. I give the novel a strong 4-star rating.

I've found a new favorite author!
By Patto
Fist I read Tell No One, and loved it. Now I've started the Myron Bolitar series, and the first book, Deal Breaker, is another winner. I look forward to reading my way through all the books.

Myron is a great character – a wise guy who can't help joking around even with a gun trained on his heart. He's thirty-five and still lives with his mother and father, who exhibit the smothering behavior we expect from Jewish parents. Yet he's a viral guy, still nursing a passion for his ex-girlfriend Jessica. A former FBI agent, he has investigative skills and martial arts training. A former basketball star, he's now a sports agent. His best friend, Windsor Horne Lockwood III (Win), looks like a wimpy Wasp, but is in fact a bit of a psycho, a crack shot and expert bone-breaker.

Two unsolved cases become of interest to Myron – the murder of his ex-girlfriend Jessica's father and the disappearance of her sister. The sister was also the fiance of one of Myron's clients, a brilliant young football player. Myron, who believes in justice and truth, despite his strong sense of irony, finds himself deep into a dangerous investigation. His encounters with big-time mobsters, hit men, pornographers, and small-time con men are great fun, with Myron delivering smart-alecky quips, and Win adding menace.

It's entertaining to watch Myron working his many and varied connections. And I also greatly enjoyed watching Myron and Win exercise their martial arts skills on unsuspecting bad guys.

The story is rife with colorful characters, like Myron's Latino assistant Esperanza, a petite and gorgeous former lady wrestler. Harlan Coben is a good writer, and his characters have all the charm, foibles and absurdities of real people.

So this book has my enthusiastic recommendation, and I've already ordered the next three.

Satisfying like hamburger, but not filet
By Kindle Customer
So I'll start the review by saying I've already bought the next book in the series. This one was fun, with enough twists and complications to keep me turning the pages. (Well, swiping the screen, anyway...) The characters were predictable, behaving pretty much the way their caricatures would behave. And that's my only real complaint about the book. They were too simplistic, too predictable. The hero is the stereotyped wise-cracking private eye -- I mean "sports agent"-- and problems get solved thru convenient little accidents or nearly cliched verbal repartee. But hey, the plot was interesting throughout, it moved quickly, and the final twist caught me by surprise. (Usually I know whodunit early on -- this one got me.) So I'm looking forward to episode two, knowing it likely won't be a masterpiece, but should be an enjoyable escape.
