Faster Is Easier & Comprehension Better
By K. Johnson
This is a helpful book that allows you to assess your reading speed by doing the exercises in the book, and doing your own calculations. You can learn the simple technique of this and rate your progress. I was able to read significantly faster after following the tips and methods in in "Speed Reading Made Easy." It's primarily about skimming quickly. There are pointers on skimming for main ideas, cluster of details, and using the vertical field of vision. Another major technique you must use is not reading to your self with you "inner voice." Your inner voice slows you down. By simply scanning the words your brain recognizes what your reading, hence you'll understand, and your comprehension will actually improve.
I have to go over this book every year and a half, because for some reason, over lengthy periods of time, my reading slows down. I then have to focus on picking up my reading speed. It works, and it's easier to speed read than to read in the slow, time consuming, inner voice, traditional way.

Unmatched techniques
By Middle of the road
I have bought three of these books. I have sought to increase my reading speed since taking the Evelyn Woods speed reading classes and system back in the day. I have been on a quest to achieve exceptional reading speed for a long time, with four systems under my belt. I concluded that I was chasing a ghost until I found this book.

I knew something was different after reading the Introduction section. She starts explaining the science, mechanics, and techniques; reading styles, methods, and how the brain, eyes, and thinking work to understand the results of your current reading numbers. Then she explains how to correct and change your bad tendencies into good practices which results in the type of reader you want to become. That is when I was sold. I was very impressed to read that Dr. Smith believes that it is of no value to increase speed at the expense of decreasing comprehension. Her teachings, unlike the others, places high value on speed and comprehension the latter being perhaps more important than the speed. Dr. Smith's system gives you the opportunity to achieve both. This is the problem with other methods. You are taught to get in game and just read fast, slide your hand, fingers, or some device and MAKE your eyes move faster. Dr. Smith explains why this is a fallacy and a waste of time because it's not how the mechanics of reading works in the brain.

It's amazing when you identify your starting speed and comprehension, mine was 182 wpm and 82% comprehension, and then through practice and following the instructions of this book you later see your speed at 382 wpm/ 89%. It was a shock and made my eyes water when I totaled my results and saw 628 wpm with a comprehension of 91%. This book is amazing! If you give the teachings serious effort and diligence you will definitely see your speed increase by a factor of three and more. You are limited only by your desire. My goal is the 1000 wpm mark with a minimum of 90% comprehension; not there yet but one day....

Even though Dr. Smith has passed on, I wish the examples can be updated and this book made into an ebook with modern, updated graphics and enhanced material for all note pads...may be a pipe dream but I can at least dream.
