A nice little book to help you write better and faster.

As a copywriter myself, I'm always interested to see what someone else in my industry has to say about being more effective. I particularly enjoyed Ryan's section on how to create structure and order for a writing process. Most of the time my writing process is incoherent and disorganized, and knowing how a top professional assembles his sales letters and other types of writing gives me great insight as well as actionable instruction for my future projects.

I also liked his section on re-purposing as well as well his section on Single-Mindedness, I can see these helping me out quite a bit for upcoming projects.

Helped me get over my "Inner Editor"

I must admit, I want my words to be perfect. I have to convince myself right now not to go back and re-read that first sentence to check for any grammatical errors.

"Speed Writing for Nonfiction Writers: How to Double or Triple Your Daily Word Count" by Ryan Healy helped me realize that writing slowly and editing while I write is actually counter productive. Writing faster helps you get all your ideas out of your head quickly, then allows you to really optimize your writing once it's on paper (or on your hard drive).

If you want to get some writing done fast, this is a great book to help you get over your "inner editor" and start getting all your ideas down in a short period of time.

Full of tips you can use immediately

This was a quick read that had many great tips even experienced writers can use. I personally found the 4 step formula pretty helpful. The part on skipping the urge to find a specific fact by inserting a gap, then researching later, would have saved me days in time wasted writing past articles. You're sure to pick up at least one time saving tip with this book.

I've been a grants professional for 20 years, and I can say without hesitation that this is the most useful and valuable grant seeking guide I have come across. It's comprehensive, detailed, and written with such style and artfulness that it's never dry and boring reading! Every nonprofit professional seeking grant funding should read this, share with staff members (especially people new to the grant seeking profession, it's a great primer) and keep a copy on their shelves. And it's not just for novices. The most experienced grant seekers will find value in the clear thinking and the reminders that we can always dig deeper to make our proposals more persuasive and competitive. I continue to refer to mine for fresh ideas when I'm feeling stuck or in need of a new perspective.

Essential Tool for All Grantsmanship Professionals

Grantsmanship: Program Planning & Proposal Writing was suggested by a friend as a good resource. I just finished reading the book and I agree completely. As I read the last page I felt like I could write a very successful proposal. The examples and stories of projects in the book are inspiring. It presents the process of applying for grants in a very methodical, precise way that makes it look extremely doable. Having applied for grants without this guide I can see how our proposals would have been vastly improved. We would have presented a better product to the Grant giver and we would have had a better program if we had gone through the careful steps presented in this book. If you are looking for a guide to writing Grant proposals, this is an excellent choice and an enjoyable read in the bargain.

A must have resource for grant seekers

Program Planning & Proposal Writing is the "must have" resource for today's fund development specialist. It is a wonderfully expanded version of the original curriculum developed by Norton Kiritz with great examples of how to communicate organizational credibility, how to document community needs, craft measurable outcomes, and design a solid work plan. It also covers building a defensible project budget that aligns fully with the proposed work plan, how to describe project sustainability (I used to call it "the dreaded 's' word), and strategies for developing an evaluation plan to monitor program progress and impact. Having been in the grant seeking field for more than two decades, I credit the original Program Planning and Proposal Writing model with my increasing success in landing multi-million dollar federal grant awards and some hefty private funds as well. I've seen other "grant development" resources out there and attended several different trainings on the subject. Program Planning and Proposal Writing continues to be my "go to resource" when I'm working on a project and need guidance. Nothing compares to the gold standard set by The Grantsmanship Center.

A book you can actually cook with

A really well-researched book with recipes I will actually make. THE HOBBIT is a favorite of mine and I'm always worried when people try to make a buck off of a trend or something well-loved. The author clearly knows her stuff. It's not just food with Bilbo's name slapped on it. This is a historically-accurate book, with food you can still easily cook, that connects the food and appreciation for food in THE HOBBIT to Tolkien's own experiences growing up on rations. It's an amazing concept. The photos are stunning. The food is very comfort-driven. She also offers alternatives for gluten-free folks, vegans, and others with food preferences. Love it!

Delicious, Different and a Delight.

What a delight! We've made 15 of the recipes so far and have absolutely loved them. I especially like the suggestions for using the left overs - very economical and sensible. I'm an old fashioned cook (I use recipes that date back four generations in my family) and love the wholesome, country style goodness of these recipes.

As someone else mentioned, I did notice a type-o and wish that the editing had been more careful. In the "Strawberries and Cream Bread" the ingredients call for 1/2 cup heavy cream, but the text mentions 1 cup heavy cream. I believe the 1/2 cup measurement is correct. At least that's what I used this morning and the bread turned out moist, light and delicious.

Some of the ingredients are a bit unusual (at least these days), but my local chain grocery store has had everything. The meat department just had to order the rabbit and oxtail for me, but everything else has been in stock.

One doesn't have to be a Hobbit fan to appreciate these recipes. This is down-home country cooking at its best.

Usually when I get a cookbook I just skim through the recipes, but when An Unexpected Cookbook came in the mail I sat down and read through every recipe step by step. Not only am I excited to make some delicious Hobbit inspired meals from these recipes, but I also learned a whole lot about Victorian-era food and cooking, and what types of things Tolkien would have eaten throughout his life. There's a lot of personality and humor mixed in throughout the steps of the recipes, which makes them more entertaining to read than any cookbook I've encountered before. The suggestions for how to reuse leftovers in other recipes is also a plus. This is a really cute and engrossing cookbook! I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Tolkien!

Days of Courage great for teaching tolerance

This book allows the reader to see 1957 Little Rock Arkansas from the viewpoint of Elizabeth Eckford, one of the nine African American teens to integrate Centeral Highschool.
Richard Kelso writes in a manner which allows young readers to grasp the political situation that America was in ,and the racial tension that was blatantly displayed at the time.
Students who have read this book also find the personal viewpoint of teenage Eckford easy to relate to. The characters were very real and understandable.
I have taught this book to both 4th and 6th grades with great success. It is a great discussion starter and tolerance teacher.

Days of Courage a great book for awareness training

This serious book tackles the huge topic of discrimination in a very real and easy to understand manner. Students are able to grasp the frustration of ninth grade Elizabeth Eckford, one of the nine African American teens that struggled to integrate Little Rock High. I have successfully used this book to discuss civil rights and freedom with grades 4-6.
A great book to teach in conjunction with The Sneeches by Dr. Suess, and Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals (another of the Little Rock Nine).
