About the Author
Susan Thesenga has been a therapist and spiritual teacher for the past forty years, teaching throughout the United States and Brazil. Her first book The Undefended Self is used as a text in centers which train healers and transformational therapists. She lives with her husband Donovan near Charlottesville, VA at the Sevenoaks Retreat Center, which they founded in 1972. Pamela Thesenga is in full recovery and lives in Charlottesville.

Love Unbroken

In this book, Love Unbroken, Susan Thesenga so beautifully illustrates the "in the trenches" journey of a mother trying to bring her daughter back "home" through the love they share. Susan's desire to continue to move toward her own inner authority - to follow her own heart and gut - as messy and confusing as it felt at times, was awe-inspiring.
Whatever the outer circumstances of each person's journey with this gripping disease, Susan demonstrates the humanness of following her instinct to love, despite the outer expertise and protests, and this was what ultimately saved them both. I pray this is the beginning of a new era, where we find more ways to see those suffering with addiction through the eyes of love and connection, which is what they need most to gather the strength to return to us.

A marvel of candor

Susan Thesenga's book, Love Unbroken, is stunning. The story is so personal and real. I have known Susan for 40 years, and have heard of many of the aspects of her life revealed in this book, but never in such full and vivid detail. Susan is an extremely intelligent and conscious person, who has devoted her life to realizing the depth of her humanness and her spirituality. She and and her husband Donavan have been utterly committed teachers of healing and awakening for many decades.
Everything that Susan was and knew was demanded of her by her daughter Pamela's frightening descent into the dark reaches of drug addiction. I was deeply touched by Susan's depth of commitment and devotion to Pamela. She courageously reveals in the book her own wounds, needs, depth of despair, and the moment to moment workings of her own psyche as she faces her own deep issues. This book is a marvel of candor.
Pamela's voice is heard frequently as she tells in a most open and succinct way what was going on in her during the most trying times.
I previously had not read much about the experiences of addicts who hit very bottom, so I was constantly shocked and horrified by what Pamela goes through. It was hard to put the book down, though I would often have to walk away from it, even for a day, to give myself time to digest the latest unfoldment.
Susan also gives us a rare and unusual up-close view of the healing power of a sacred medicine used originally by indigenous tribes in the Amazon, and now as the sacrament of certain religions in Brazil.
This is an extraordinary book. It will live inside of you. You will find your self recommending it to various close friends whom you know will also be touched by it.

Riveting!

I read Love Unbroken straight through, couldn't put it down. Unbelievable story, unbelievable suffering. In spite of already being personally familiar with the basic story of Susan and Pam, there was just no way I could possibly have grasped the depths of the horror that was fleshed out so nakedly and powerfully in their book. Over and over again the heartbreak of hopefulness, cures, rehab and even repeated direct experiences of the Divine failed again and again to permanently put Pam back on track. No glib quick fixes or easy shortcuts in this story, thankfully. I was afraid I'd read "She was a miserable addict who hit bottom, took ayahuasca, and was saved." but Thesenga's narrative is the very opposite of such more-common "miracle" tales where once a solution is found, everything is neat and tidied up and the book tour begins, with the author selling the new solution/snake oil as a one-size-fits-all, fix-it-fad-of-the-day. This book is not that. It is, instead, the true story, the real deal, what it's really like, no agenda being pushed, just the ripped-open heart of surrender and the honest account of Susan and Pam's own process and learning curve about love and attachment and the Great Mystery that sometimes looks more like Hell on earth than anything resembling the also-present-Divine, and it paints that paradox quite clearly.
