Absolutely fantastic book! This takes Arno Ilgner's concetps to a higher, more scientifically-based, level. McGrath and Elison beautifully combine science, psychology and a wealth of climbing experince to create a book that's not just entertaining to read, but will help you take your climbing to the next level. Whether you are a 5.7 or a 5.14 climber, stuck at a plateau or struggling to get past a self-imposed setback, this book gives you the tools and the science on why they will work when applied to re-engage and succeed. I have been climbing for over 15 years and this has been one of the best books that I have ever read on the subject. If you are looking to take your mastery to the next level, highly consider taking the time to read and apply the lessons learned from this book.

The first book of its kind

This one is destined to become a classic. Before reading it, I wasn't convinced that there was much to say about the subject that hadn't already been said in books like Performance Rock Climbing, How to Climb 5.12, The Rock Warrior's Way, etc. It turns out there was quite a bit.

Usually, when someone offers advice, what they are really leading with is "be more like me". While that can be useful, it often doesn't translate to a richer understanding. Vertical Mind instead leads with "here's the current science of how our brains and our neural pathways work" and then proceeds to link the science with the authors' understanding of the climbing game, with a partial bias toward hard sport climbing. Whereas we have all (?) heard suggestions to take practice whippers, write down beta, climb with motivated partners, etc, this book explains in very simple terms the neurobiology behind why these habits can help, why other habits might hurt, and what we need to do as individuals when we recognize a need to change a habit.

It's fascinating stuff. It applies to climbing, and to much more than that.

Love this book

Fantastic book. I have been climbing for about five years and continue to improve. But I had not thought about the fact that I have more to learn than just physical improvement. The book covers so much. You can read it whenever you like, rest days, recovering from an injury, etc. I started reading it on an outdoor climbing trip and it was very beneficial. It covers so much I can't write in a review. I highly recommend it. It's not just about climbing, it also goes into how the mind works, which I find fascinating. Great book.

Classic 1980s French Sci-fi

French sci-fi that reminds one of Orwell's 1984. The characters are developed enough to tell the story. The plot is based on a future wherein extremely low temperatures and ice cover much of the globe. Major factions fight political and military battles to gain controlling interest over the railways. The railways are the lifeblood of the corporate types and the only way to move supplies between areas. Adding to the complexity of the story line is the race of modified humans that have adapted to survive the extreme low temperatures.

This book sets up the scenario and walks us through one man's struggle to grasp what is going on and understand the battles for the weaponized rail-space and the true status of the modified humans.

Very 1980s French in its' world view. Those who enjoy European writing will find this book interesting. Those who haven't tried European sci-fi will find this a refreshing change.

Perfect guidebook for amateurs

This is a wonderfully concise guide book for the amateur conductor. The book is well organized and the concepts are clearly stated. If you are a struggling amateur conductor of a church choir or community orchestra, this is the book for you.

Wish I read the book before, but read on......

I read the entire book page by page. It is extremely well written and spells out everything about conducting. "Complete" is pefect for this book. I got put into a conducting position when I went to concert band rehearsal one night and the guy who said he would do it was not feeling comfortable about it (and he teaches jazz trumpet playing and improv in classes around the US!). I said I would do it. Being a flute player makes it tough as I can follow the melodic lines in the score but the other parts are tough. Only half of the music has a full score as some of the music is pretty old and has been passed through many hands over the years, so the music for the first concert of the season (and I had to conduct) was a challenge. I got this book after that concert. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to mark up the scores. But after reading the book I feel more confident about helping out again. Luckily the audience was very receptive (seniors from the senior homes in town). A great learning environment for a newbie conductor!

Very good book and highly recommend for newbies

He takes you through conducting rather quickly and I will say if you NEVER conducted before this can be a good introduction to you and giving you the basic, however it might be a little fast paced. All in all, I really like this book and I picked up a few new things after 11 years of conducting a children's choir.
