Awful Book for College Denizens (what's the rest of the alphabet?)

This was a required book for an online class I am taking with assignments straight out of the book.

With most languages and development environments that are being actively improved, any attempt at capturing a snapshot of them is inevitably stagnant, so the datedness of the material is excusable (except for the fact that it conveniently allows this college-targeted publisher to deprecate editions faster than search engine companies deprecate their browser versions); the violation of nearly every Java programming convention, however, is not.

While any printed material that targets imparting development knowledge will require some level of step by step instructions, this book never goes beyond those step by step instructions, never making any attempt to prod the student into making neural connections between concepts, focused only on getting something that runs.

Even the disparity between whatever version of Android Studio this was developed with, and a current version of Android Studio, have been carefully written away, with the step by step instructions referencing line numbers and autocomplete as much as, if not more than, actual "instantiations" available in the Android SDK (yes, instantiation is an OOP concept, and no, you are not using it correctly).

If you have any choice in the matter, avoid this book; if your degree can work around it, avoid any class that requires this.

Great book, wish it had an eBook / PDF version

I was told to buy this book as part of my app development class. I want to give it 5 stars but I feel like there could have been a bit more explaining for some parts. Or rather, more examples for certain concepts that take a while to learn.

I just wish there was a Kindle / eBook / PDF version. I am surprised that there isn't because this book was made in 2015, where almost every book has an electronic version.

The book provides comprehensive coverage of the subject, starting with the basics. It is organised in four parts. Part 1 contains the basic knowledge required to understand the subject: matrix operations, methods for solving equations, and concepts of flexibility matrix and stiffness matrix methods. Part 2 deals with the applications of stiffness and flexibility matrix methods using a system approach. By using simple examples, the steps involved in both the methods are discussed' this section concludes with discussion of why the stiffness matrix method is more suitable for analysis of skeletal structures. Part 3 covers the stiffness matrix (displacement) method with member approach (direct stiffness method) which is extensively used in the analysis of framed structures. It provides the details of the method, the steps involved in the method, and its application to plane truss, space truss, beams, plane and space frames, and grids. Part 4 includes a unified computer programme written in FORTRAN/C for the analysis of a framed structure. The development of computer programme, explanation of various subroutines, and input output formats with examples are also provided. An accompanying CD contains source code, explanation of INPUT/OUTPUT and test examples. The primary objective of the book is to present the subject matter in a simple manner so that it can serve as a basic learning tool for undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering.

About the Author
P.N. Godbole obtained Bachelors (Honours) degree in Civil Engineering from IIT Bombay, Masters (Structures) from the erstwhile University of Roorkee, India (Now IIT Roorkee) and Doctorate from University of Wales, Swansea, UK. He worked in various capacities at Civil Engineering Department of University of Roorkee from 1963 onwards, where he had a long and distinguished career in teaching, research and consultancy. After retirement, he joined VNIT, Nagpur, where he utilized award of AICTE and UGC Emeritus Fellowship and later on continued as Professor Emeritus. At present he is Professor Emeritus at RCOEM Nagpur, India. He has published more than 140 research papers in national and international journals/conferences and has supervised 25 doctoral candidates. He has also authored books on Cable Suspended Roofs and Finite Element Method.His main areas of interest are finite element method, computer aided design, wind effects on structure and steel structures. R.S. Sonparote , PhD, is Associate Professor, Department of Applied Mechanics, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, India. With 20 years of experience in teaching, research and consultancy, Dr. Sonparote has published/presented several papers in national and international journals/conferences.His main areas of interest are computer aided analysis and design, structural dynamics and soil structure interaction. S.U. Dhote is Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Yeshwantrao Chavan College of Engineering (YCCE), Nagpur, India. His areas of interest are wind effects, matrix analysis, steel structures, earthquake resistance designs and finite element method. He has published/presented several research papers in national/international journals.

Great Book for building your own CNC router

I stumbled upon this book while doing some research for buying a CNC router. After reading through it I decided not to buy a prebuilt system and instead build my own. The author has a unique talent for creating a design that requires only minimal fabrication -- if you can drill holes and saw then you can build this router table. The author also gives dead simple instructions on assembling all the bits.

I'm not sure what the one star reviewer is talking about. The author doesn't sell the parts--he gives some sources for buying the parts (home depot, tractor supply, etc) and recommendations on how to minimize costs.

Very informative

Goes through every aspect of building and setting up your cnc machine. Each chapter has estimated material cost info. The book is well conceived and well illustrated. I really don't know how much info there is on this subject matter but I am happy I purchased the book. I am in no way, shape, or form tech savvy. Armed with the information contained in this book can help to demystify most of the aspects of taking on such an intimidating task. The book seems to be displayed in easy to understand terms that take you step by step through the building process. My method of learning is from a visual aspect so the illustrations are a plus for me .I looked at the prospect of buying a completed cnc machine and also the various kits that you can purchase but found most of them not big enough for my needs. By purchasing the book and buying all the electronics and hardware separately I reasoned that I could build a more bang for the buck cnc machine. I'm sticking to this plan so far so good I hope this is helpful.

More a representation of the authors own spirit guide rather than a guide to spirit..

It is both edited and written well. I found it a little dry on actual expectations of experience, despite various descriptions of the authors own dream experiences. Instead of the constant talk about his own spirit guide I expected a clearer indication of what a non guided person might be experiencing.
The author suggests taking 4 mg of Galantamine and 200mg Choline to help the body/mind become more receptive to lucid dreaming.
Galantamine can cause serious side effects and should not be taken with any other medication that increases the activity of Acetylcholine.
Using Cholin can raise the Acetylcholine levels. Acetylcholine is a precursusor to choline. So in fact by taking both you are increasing the chances of side effects of Galantamine.
Advocating the use of either or both drugs to put yourself into a state more conducive for lucid dreaming is something I find irresponsible. Whilst I can get on board with the healthy eating, meditating and exercise, I am not sure whether the author has understood the full implications of recommending the intake of certain substances.

Makes Lucid Dreaming Easy

I just finished this book. I loved it. I had read Waggoner's book and Laberge's previously and found them terrifically interesting, but only had one lucid dream after many attempts. After, and while reading, this book I have had at least 10 lucid dreams (some semi-lucid). There was something about paying attention to who was in my dreams that just sort of woke me up inside of them. I really pay attention to which characters appear conscious and which appear more zombie-like. The book is fantastic. Cathy O.

Let's stay lucid and have fun!

Thousands years ago, an ancient Chinese philosopher named Chuang Tzu one day recalled a dream in which he was a butterfly, he pondered, was it that he was the butterfly dreamed Tzu, or Tzu dreamed the butterfly? For eons, this posted question had and has always been studied and explored among cultures all around the globe.

If one asks why we sleep? Why we dream? Why is it important for us to know all about lucid dreaming and explore? Perhaps I could borrow the lucky number 8 (which is talked about in Nick Barrett's book SGLD)to demonstrate--it presents as a reminder of our eternal infinite nature, it is not only a symbol, but also a miniature representation of the relationship between ether and matter--during sleep (or meditative state) we are constantly at the middle touching point--where the finite and the infinite meets and embraces each other. Each time we go into dream state, it is as simple as our consciousness naturally flows from finite world into the infinite reality. We swim in the eternal void, conjure up as much as we could as children of God, with information we brought with us from real life field on earth. If we are lucid (meaning bring our waking awareness into dream state) every dream state is an opportunity for us to experience, experiment, relearn and recreate, without the constraint of time and space.

Ever since I was a child, I always had vivid dreams that were so real, even during bathroom break in the middle of the night, I would murmur to myself, "oh, where was I? I will pick up where I was as soon as I get back to bed!" I believe it is intrinsic knowing in every child that the veil between dream and waking states so thin and the transition so seamless that we almost could not tell the differences. As children we just naturally feel and live in multiple realities without discerning so much, which is why lucid dream was such an effortless thing to many as a child. But as we grow up, our head is occupied by worries, nagging from parents, societal norms, etc.....we gradually forget or lose such capacity.

Nick Barrett has well put together the forgotten in his Spirit Guided Lucid Dreaming and reminds us that just a few techniques could help us get back on track.

To people who are interested in this subject, Nick's book is not overall too technical because this is more than just the-how kind of book. You will notice Nick's wealth of knowledge and wisdom is beyond his age. The way he delivered in his book will help you discover and integrate innate knowing that has always been inside us.

To a beginning dreamer, this book will open doors for you, help you understand the infinite possibilities that await you on the other side of the dream world. But advanced dreamer will not be disappointed because this book also provides so much insight and personal experiences. If you are thinking of picking this book up for a trip, this little gem is going to be a pleasant read and a great trigger for you to really experience lucid dreaming.

What I took away from this book are more than just some techniques, I saw deep truth and ancient knowledge and feel there was much more that Nick already conveyed.

Look forward to Nick's evolution and more insights blossoming from his never-ending new experiences, be it from the dream world or this shared reality we are in. :-)
