Rothman, a sociologist at the City University of New York, is herself a wife and mother, and her third book, following In Labor and The Tentative Pregnancy , centers on how "motherhood" can be undermined by technology. Indicting scientific "progress" that can reduce women to machines bearing children for sale, she adds her opinion to the controversary surrounding "Baby M" and related issues. Rothman warns of the grave social problems already evinced by alternative methods of "having" babies, such as surrogacy, artificial conception, etc. Readers may quarrel with some of the author's convictions but they will agree with her argument that it's past time for women to restore motherhood to its proper status.

Father Technology Doesn't Know Best

Barbara Katz Rothman provides a riveting discussion of the moral, ethical and social implications of reproductive technology. But it saddens me that she -- like so many educated women -- seems to accept the idea that Father Technology -- in the form of the medical/pharmaceutical industry -- offers the only possible solution to infertility, aside from adoption. Must it be either/or? Female intuition tells me "no" and there's a mother lode of healthful and nourishing traditions that modern women can profitably mine. I would highly recommend Katie Singer's book "Garden of Fertility" for any couples experiencing infertility and considering their options.

The information in this book is worthwhile, but the poor editing and proofreading make it difficult to read. The mistakes, both typographical errors and sometimes tortured prose, were so frequent as to prove distracting to someone reading at any level of detail.

Any reader who has been in business aviation even for a short period of time will easily resonate with this excellent work. It provides practical guidance and direction for both an experienced person and the beginner. The authors have clearly been in aviation operations and management for some time and been involved in a variety of operational scenarios. Their perspective and advice will be of value to all, be they pilot, mechanic, scheduler, manager or corporate executive.

I particularly liked the standard operating procedures, human resources and safety management systems chapters. They were all very good, inclusive summaries and guides for those essential topics.

Que un libro digital no contenga un �ndice interactivo es tolerable solo cuando el libro es gratuito. Pero �ste no lo es. Si uno quiere saltar a otro cap�tulo tiene que pasar p�gina por p�gina, y si no se ha acordado de poner una marca de p�gina all� desde donde salt�, tambi�n tendr� que volver p�gina por p�gina. Adem�s cada m�s o menos media p�gina hay una especie de numeraci�n in�til con una retahila de s�mbolos, de lo m�s molesto. Por �ltimo, aunque no lo puedo probar, me da la impresi�n, por la sintaxis y alguna palabra, de que el texto ha sido traducido del ingl�s, en lugar del italiano. Desde luego el traductor no se molesta en aclararlo.

While you take notes, you listen carefully to the lecturer, you process the new material, you organize it in your working memory, and you finally write down what you think is most important. All this happens while someone is talking at an average speed of three words per second and someone is writing down at an average speed of one-third of a word per second. It doesn’t sound easy now, does it?

Notes are an important tool for learning. We don’t take notes just to record a few facts so we can review them later. Learning happens as we take notes. Taking notes the right way leads to good study practices, better performance on exams, and long-term retention of information.

“It comes naturally.” FALSE. Note taking is not obvious or intuitive. Research has shown that students fail to capture 40% of the main points in a typical lecture. First-year students capture only 11%. In some studies, even the best note takers seem to record less than 75% of the important information. People think they take good notes until they’re told they don’t. Few of us have consciously thought about how we take notes (let alone how to improve the quality of them). We often reproduce the lecturer’s phrases verbatim. We don’t save time by systematic use of abbreviations. We fail to become a “good psychologist” of our lecturer. We fail to pick up his enthusiasm. We fail to interpret the tone of his voice. We fail to read his body language. And the result is that we fail to take good notes.

“Anyway, no one taught me how to take notes in school or in college.” TRUE. Educators believe that students are able to assess the quality of their notes and follow good practices. However, studies have shown the exact opposite. The fact that there isn’t a course in college dedicated to the art of taking notes (or learning in general) makes students believe that this is a natural skill that they can perfect with practice over the course of their studies.

“At the end of the day, everyone has their own way to take notes.” TRUE. In this book, you may be surprised to learn that I don’t make any references to different types of note-taking systems like those that other books do. The reason is that it’s the practices behind the note taking that matter most. For example, you should not copy the lecturer’s phrases word for word, but generate the main points in your own words. And you should leave space on your notes for adding comments and testing yourself later. I encourage students to use the Cornell note-taking system because it utilizes most of the principles of effective note taking. No matter which note-taking system you decide to follow, the cognitive effort you will have to expend is equally high.

Note taking may not be rocket science, but it’s definitely science—cognitive science. And cognitive science has produced a lot of useful insights that we can use now to take better notes. This book presents these insights in simple words, so you can make the most of your notes and use them to study effectively.

The author tries to give concrete examples of taking notes, based on academic and professional literature, while presenting a global framework in the field. I found the book interesting, practical and up to the point, with a well structured flow and presentation. I would suggest it to people interested to increase their productivity and efficiency.

Perfect For College Students!

After reading "How to learn 10X Faster" I needed a way to take notes better while staying focused during lectures when I came across this book.

I will go out on a limb here and say that I have up'd my College grade good enough to talk to my financial aid worker about scholarship financing next semester...

The book seems to repeat itself often, but overall is very informative and I believe it will help me in my journey to learn Korean! It's not a very long or difficult read, and I would recommend this to anyone who cares about actually learning information.

The Best Book on Financial Institutions. Period.

This is probably the best book in risk management available today. This is due to the combination of breadth and depth of the text. The author gently introduces the student to an important subject and explains with pains how to manage each and every kind of risk. The two chapters on Interest rate risk are absolutely fabulous. There is a sense of continuity because the concepts you learn in one chapter has applications in another. The problems at the end of the chapters are are also challenging and will require an in-depth understanding of the subject. This book is the ultimate.

Excellent introduction to risk management

The book is very good and it starts describing the special nature of financial institutions and the industry. Then, in the second part you have complete chapters relating to every risk management: interest rate risk (maturity, repricing gaps and duration focuses, liquidity (e.g.maturity ladder), market risk (standarized Basel Committee and VaR approaches) credit risk (including Basel Committe standarized approach, defalult risk models like credit scoring), operating costs and technology risk, FX risk, sovereign risk.
In the last part there is a good section which describes how to manage risks , including liabilty and liquidity management,deposit insurance, capital adequacy, geographic diversification, derivatives, the new credit risk management techniques and securitization.
I had the chance to have Profesor Saunders as a risk management teacher and I only say that as his classes, his book is great. It shows you the best introduction to risk management. It discusses about financial institutions (banks, insurance and securities). That book just helped me to see financial institutions under the risk focus. I really recommend this book to understand risk management.

A comprehensive book on risk management from a financial institution's perspective

The text covers everything you would expect from a book about risk management: credit risk, IR risk, derivatives, securitization, etc. In my opinion the authors have done a nice job of explaining various models/concepts/ideas in a clear and concise fashion.

It's also noteworthy to mention that if you are using this book you're probably using it in a class. Heads up - the chapter problem solution keys provided by your professor from the publisher (the MSWord files the publisher distributes) contain a surprisingly large number of trivial errors here -- ie. incorrect algebra and other errors. The problems are otherwise helpful in terms of understanding the material nonetheless.
