If You Use R Code for Statistics, This is a Solid Reference

I'll say up front: This was a tough book to rate. However, upon reflection and a careful re-reading of the introductory matter, I decided on full marks. Mr. Lewis makes no pretense this is a textbook, and I'm sure it wouldn't suffice in that role. Rather, "100 Statistical Tests in R" provides a solid reference, with many worked examples, on inference procedures that many scientists and researchers need. Usually they need them without all the theoretical trappings, and that's where this book excels: "Just the tests, ma'am."

The presentation is spare and clean, with solid literature research. The R code appears to be up to date (at time of release, anyway), and package references are valid. An amazingly wide range of examples is shown, from communicating with whales to stock trading, game theory to medical applications.

My concerns are not with the quality of the test procedures or the code. I tried quite a few of the procedures, and found them to be functional and clear. The organization of the tests into groups covering correlation/causation, hypothesis testing, independence, and more is useful, and clearly shown early in the volume. I especially enjoy having more than one option even within a single test.

I am always a bit worried about efforts to enable sophisticated analyses and inference without sufficient context or support for the less-sophisticated researcher, who is tempted to use the procedure as a "black box" and then believe they know enough to decide and act. Many of these tests are like carving an object with a supremely sharp knife; if you're not a master carver you can lose some skin, or perhaps a finger. For those who need these tests but haven't serious grounding in their foibles, I strongly recommend developing a relationship with a practicing statistician and seeking guidance.

These concerns do not reduce the usefulness of this presentation of statistical tests. The author makes no claims about one's ability to correctly infer in a particular situation. His guidance is otherwise.

If you're looking for a listing of the mathematical equations for all these tests, you'll need to look elsewhere. However, if you're in a technical, research or development setting and use R (or have access to R coders to help), I heartily recommend this book to you.

A Handy Desk Reference Guide

This is a very good list of statistical tests. It provides some basic application and usage examples and then an example of how to run the test in R.

I would suggest you have a solid understanding of statistics before purchasing as you will both have to know what you're looking for and the underlying concepts behind them; this is not "Statistics in R for Dummies". A knowledge of R is not required, but should of course be reccomended...

You get a lot more than the $3 price tag out of this, if you know how to use it....

About the Author
T. Padmanabhan is a Distinguished Professor and Dean of Core Academic Programmes at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune. He is a renowned theoretical physicist and cosmologist with nearly 30 years of research and teaching experience both in India and abroad. Professor Padmanabhan has published over 200 research papers and nine books, including six graduate-level textbooks. These include the Structure Formation in the Universe and Theoretical Astrophysics, a comprehensive 3-volume course. His research work has won prizes from the Gravity Research Foundation (USA) five times, including the First Prize in 2008. In 2007 he received the Padma Shri, the medal of honour from the President of India, in recognition of his achievements.

Best Advanced GR Book Existing

It's surprising this book hasn't received any reviews here. This is possibly one of the finest general relativity textbooks existing today. Superbly modern in it's exposition of the general relativity. If you're asking why the IRF moves on geodesics, you'll find the answer to that here. If you're wondering why the relativistic Lagrangian is integral of mc^2 ds, you'll find the answer to that here, rather than shady arguments used in other books. Practically everything here is derived from variational principles, so GR just feels so natural. It's hard to believe that GR could even be thought of in such an eye-opening way. I can only imagine what a good expositor Professor Padmanabhan is like in real life.

The Pros of the book:

*The most illuminating problems and projects not present in any other book.

*Clear, concise writing and conceptual detail

*Covers modern topics like QFT in curved spacetime (I haven't gotten here yet though)

*Gives an introduction to the formulation of GR using differential forms

*The only prerequisites are some analytical mechanics at the level of Goldstein, some basic electrodynamics, and some special relativity. He doesn't even assume any familiarity with 4 vectors. However, a prior acquaintance with GR would be good to have, I learnt my GR the first time with Hobson, Efstathiou and Lasenby, and then moved to this.

*Almost no typos.

The Cons:

*Cosmology section is very brief and this could have been expanded greatly. This was disappointing and it felt like a stumble in the book. Then again, this is hardly an issue considering the entire book.

In all, this book is pure gold. If 6 stars were available, I'd give it that.

Con m�s de 30 a�os de experiencia docente, ha ocupado durante diez a�os una plaza de catedr�tico de guitarra en el Conservatorio Superior "Rafael Orozco" de C�rdoba, donde imparti�, adem�s de Guitarra Cl�sica, las asignaturas de "Improvisaci�n y Acompa�amiento" y "Armon�a de Jazz aplicada a la Guitarra Flamenca". En el Berklee College of Music estudi� guitarra de jazz con Mick Goodrick, Jon Damian, Brett Willmott, Rick Peckham, Jim Kelly y Garrison Fewell, y armon�a de jazz, t�cnicas de improvisaci�n y arreglos con Ed Saindon, Steve Rochinski, Jackson Schultz, Dave Santoro y Ed Tomassi, entre otros, obteniendo la Licenciatura en Guitarra de Jazz con las mejores calificaciones ("Summa Cum Laude").
