Q. What inspired you to want to explore the subject of processed foods?

A. The idea for a book crystallized for me not long after I began writing about the food and beverage industries in the mid-2000s. I went to a trade show called IFT (Institute of Food Technologists), one of the food industry’s largest gatherings. Inside a massive convention center, there were people selling things like micro-particulated whey protein, inner pea fiber and starches that had been modified to mimic fat or dietary fiber. Companies talked about food as an “application,” as if it was a piece of software you put together. It seemed to me that our food had become vastly more technical and complicated than we realized, and we had little idea about what happens to it after it leaves the farm. This was the story I wanted to tell. Because in order to make good food choices, we first need to know what we’re eating.

Q. What should everyone know about processed foods?

A. Processed food represents an entirely new way of eating for us as human beings. Our diets have changed more in the last 100 years than they have in the last 10,000. So much of what we see in the middle aisles at grocery stores and on fast food menu boards simply didn’t exist a century ago.

This is a concern because, while the technology for processing food has advanced by leaps and bounds, our human biology hasn’t. The way our bodies handle food is stuck somewhere in the Stone Age, long before there was sugary boxed cereal, chicken nuggets and frozen dinners. Much of what we eat is now deeply out of synch with our biology.

Q. What surprised you the most in your research?

A. Where vitamins come from (many of them come from China and are derived from starting ingredients like sheep grease) and how prevalent soybean oil is in our diets (10% of total calories) and the health implications of that.

Q. How has your behavior changed since writing the book? Do you eat differently? Do you feed your children differently?

A. Although I generally follow my own advice – a diet with fresh, real foods at its foundation – I do eat processed foods, as do my kids. But the book has made me a little more careful of my choices. When you stare at ingredient lists long enough, the siren call of quick, convenient, indulgent food often goes on mute. I have to say that I am no longer tempted by donuts! I also stopped my occasional purchase of fast food French fries because of what I uncovered about the toxic compounds formed in heated frying oil. And I realized there we certain things I was buying prepackaged that could in fact be made relatively easily at home, like homemade mac and cheese for the kids, made with real cheese instead of the powdered stuff in the box.

Coming on the heels of the excellent Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us by Michael Moss, Pandora's Lunchbox might have seemed an also-ran. But there is surprisingly little overlap and the style author Melanie Warner brings is entirely different than the scrappy journalism of Salt Sugar Fat.

You already know the story -- there is too much salt, sugar, fat in most of the prepared food items in the supermarkets and in restaurants. They are overprocessed and overpackaged. They have little nutrition and a host of ingredients we don't need or don't need in the vast quantities provided. And don't look to the government to inspect the products or determine what's dangerous -- the government has more of an interest in promoting agri-business as it does protecting us from abuses. It's nothing new, it's been this way for over a century.

What could have been a depressing and distressing account, in Warner's hands, turns out to be quite an entertaining story with a lot of new information. For instance, her interview with a specialist in creating aromas and tastes for foods was original and informative. Warner's conversational style makes a horrifying story downright fun to read.

There is a subtle theme running through the book along with the more obvious and alarming trends. Every executive and scientist Warner interviewed admitted that they do not eat the products they sell. For them, it's home cooked food from fresh ingredients or restaurants that specialize in organic food. No Lunchables for their kids.

Can't Put it Down--Frightening and Fascinating--Very Well Written

I heard the author on the Diane Rehm show--and decided to purchase the Kindle version of the book. At the same time, I also purchased Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us as he was on the show too. As I got my Kindle book immediately, I began with it first. I'm so glad I did.

First off, the book is just really well written. The author is an excellent writer--and her book is crafted quite well. It draws you in immediately. Th whole history of chemicals, additives,food science, and food safety is completely fascinating. I knew none of it. I also had no idea just how much artificial chemically engineered crap goes into our food--nor that the US allows so many additives which Europeans and other countries find harmful. Why??? I realize that we have a laissez-faire attitude to much--but we're talking about our and our children's health. You would think that based on that, we'd be a little bit more concerned with what went into our food and its safety vs. big business and profit. Like so many things in America, profit trumps all.

I've learned so much. I had no idea how cereal was produced... veggie burgers... artificial colors/flavors, etc. I had no idea just how prevalent all of the chemical preservatives, enzymes, and additives are in our foods--pretty much everywhere, and not always labeled so that you'd know that.

I'm about 3/4s of the way through. It's Sunday night, and I started reading this on Friday night. Today I went to the grocery store--and I was quite wary of purchasing my usual standard food--especially the cereal and other stuff. I'm sure I'll still buy Cheerios and some other processed foods--but probably less, and with my eyes a bit more open. Was going to purchase some cookies, and decided that we'd bake them instead.

I feel that we as a country need to at least work to get the food additives banned in other countries, banned here. Major food companies have alternative versions of their products already created for these non-US markets, we should at least pressure them to offer those versions here.

Oh, if you go to the author's website (or search on Youtube) you can see her videos of eternal food...including the liquified chicken tenders.

What's REALLY in your FRESH blueberry muffin? MUST-READ

Melanie Warner has done a huge public service by writing this book. She delves into the unpronounceable ingredients you read on a package of prepared foods, and more, she traces the progression that prepared foods have taken to become the dominant products in the American diet. The next time you grab a package of cookies, you'll be able to read the ingredient label and really understand what's going into your mouth. These prepared foods now account for SEVENTY-PERCENT of the calories Americans eat. That's astonishing. But look at your aisles in the grocery store to see how many are devoted to prepared food (the majority.) And look at the coupons and sales fliers; most of the coupons are for prepared foods, encouraging the thrifty shopper to put these into their shopping basket.

I was absolutely delighted to see that Ms. Warner wrote in depth about "Flav-r-Bites" which are prepared jelly bits that are used instead of blueberries in commercial muffins, whether "fresh-baked" at the bakery or even at home by you (from a mix.) Flav-R-Bites are extruded flavored pectin, artificial flavor, sugar and color that imitate the look of blueberries in baked goods, but are stable on the shelf, cheap to make and 99 out of 100 people can't tell they aren't eating a real blueberry. I knew about these years and years ago, because I used to call on food manufacturing companies to visit their QA/QC labs. While sitting in the lobby waiting for an appointment at a very big-name food company, I read the trade journal and they described these new Flav-R-Bites. The next time I ate a blueberry muffin from the donut shop, I picked apart the blueberry and lo, it was exactly that extruded jelly product. Then I got a mix of "blueberry" muffins, a mix that years ago had a tin of wild Maine blueberries to toss in. Now, the mix had blueberry bits right in the flour, and yes, they were Flav-R-Bites.

But fake blueberries are the least of the issues that the author delves into. We can live without commercially-baked blueberry muffins. But what about cheese, "fresh" guacamole, and other foods that may look fresh but are actually not? She goes deeply into each additive and warns the reader where to look on packages of "deli-fresh" foods and even foods in the refrigerator section of the grocery store that are labeled fresh-made or store-made. And she leaves foods past their expiration date and finds out that they don't even spoil.

After you read this, I am certain you will want to be more choosy in what you put on your table. The sad thing is, these foods have become pervasive. I came back from a 3 year stint overseas, living in Europe where food is mostly fresh, and the change in the American foods available was a huge shock. We were not used to all the additives and literally, our tongues would feel "funny" and we noticed food didn't taste good. There has been a profound movement to these shelf-stable foods in the US. I'm convinced that this trend has been a big contributor to obesity in the US. For one thing, I notice that if I eat fresh, unprocessed food (such as locally-raised chicken) I get full and stay full after a meal, eating a lot less. If I eat a processed meal, I often feel just as hungry afterwards, and I tend to eat more. Avoiding these foods is difficult, but the author of "Pandora's Lunchbox" gives us some good guidance.

Please read this book!

How often do you think about the sheer amount of things we consume? Compared to past generations. Compared to others living in 3rd world countries. Even compared to other industrialized nations! It's not something I had given a single thought until this last year. This book is amazing because it's not just about the environmental impact or some liberal granola take on things. Any Christian can relate to what the author wants to bring to our awareness. Yes, the environment is taking a heavy hit, but other people around the world and in our own country are suffering and struggling to survive and get enough to eat and I'm shopping online for a baby tooth scrapbook and struggling to find room in our 3 car garage for all our kids toys, our cars, boats, etc. It's ridiculous! This book will change your perspective on how you live your life and hopefully spur you to make changes for the good of our planet, the good of others, and, yes, even your own good! It feels much better to focus on God and things that are really important instead of spending a couple hours shopping online for that baby tooth scrapbook!

A Christian Call to Action describes this book perfectly

My fifteen year old daughter attends an online Christian highschool and she regularly is the "odd student out" on their online forum, disagreeing with the majority of her fellow high schoolers on everything from politics to capital punishment. We are proud that she is so passionate about her beliefs and we regularly have deep conversations with her about the world and our place in it as Christians.

One topic that comes up regularly is environmentalism. We are pretty passionate about being "green" and have always taught her that caring for the environment was a Biblical mandate and should be an integral part of every Christian's life. So, she started a forum topic about stopping global warming and got pounced upon by other Christian high schoolers stating things like, "global warming is a myth", "God wants us to take dominion of the earth", "Jesus is coming back again soon, so what is the difference - the earth will be destroyed." She was in shock that they held these beliefs and after talking through it and the reasons they said these things, as misguided and wrong as they were, I decided to go looking for some books for her that spoke about environmentalism from a Christian perspective. I ended up buying a few from Amazon and "Serve God Save the Planet" was the first one we read.

It is not what I was expecting. I was expected an indepth review of "saving the planet" and why it is critical for Christians. Instead, it gives an introductury, high level view of a number of subjects. The author's passion comes through and it is a window into his journey of faith and this includes saving the planet. The book is subtitled, "A Christian Call to Action" and that is exactly what the book is and what it did for me. While he does include a great chapter making a case for Christian's to care for the earth, most of the book is his sharing his own story and calling us to action.

It is easy to read and very impactful. Each chapter resonated with me and I felt myself nodding and getting pumped up, as it is exactly what I have always felt, but in many areas have lost touch. Besides caring for the earth, he writes about taking action and doing things, he writes about having too much stuff, taking a true day of rest each week, getting rid of television and replacing it with books, serving the poor and making a difference in the lives of others around the word and raising our kids to be help the poor and care for the world.

Since reading this, I've purchased a copy for my sister and my parents and my wife is now reading it and my daughter is almost finished. I'd recommend it to everyone. Serve God Save the Planet, a Must Read for Christians living Today

J. Matthew Sleeth's book - "Serve God, Save the Planet - A Christian Call to Action" is exactly that - a Christian understanding of service to God through recognition of our relationships with one another and all creation manifesting in concrete actions. In other words it is an immensely practical book, and I think one of the most important books we have regarding what it means to be a Christian in context of the times we live in, and how to respond to the present historical moment in an authentically Christian way. Dr. Sleeth has an amazing ability to relate real life stories simply and with a touch of humor, allowing the reader to see the deeper insights contained in the story.

But the primary reason I think this book is crucial to Christians, and others, living in this time is because it is biblically relevant to our current life situation. Dr. Sleeth has what I call a holistic Christian vision - in that he clearly and concisely draws the connections between our motives and actions, and the consequences they have for our physical/spiritual/emotional health as well as how they affect our relationship to other people and creation as a whole. He demonstrates that the ecological crisis involves and affects every aspect of our lives - family relations, the value of work, leisure time, even our relationship with food. He also guides us in discerning God's will as expressed in the biblical witness.

Much of his practical advice on how to be good steward's of God's creation, including our bodies and interpersonal relationships, are not something new to the Christian tradition, rather a call to return to prudence, thrift, and God-centered living that is rooted in the ways of our spiritual ancestors. It is a call for us to reject our current cultural idols of selfishness, excess, and thoughtless consumption. It is a call for us to embrace, in very practical ways, what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ - the author of Life, for "where there is life, there is God, and where there is God, there is life. From the beginning to the end of the bible, God demands a reverence for life." (pg.136) The time is now, to respond to the call to act in Christ. Dr. Sleeth's book is a trustworthy and practical guide in how to respond to that call with "all one's heart, and all one's strength, and all one's being".

This book is based on Williamson's discovery of A Course in Miracles , a self-help guide whose provenance she doesn't explain. Age 26 at the time and feeling lost and desperate after indulging in the excesses of the 1960s, the Jewish author had no real hope for inspiration from the course because of its Christian terminology. But, she writes in this guide to the guide, the program works "miracles" for herself and for others who adopt its principles. Her extrapolations may appeal to readers in need of spiritual sustenance, but one questions Williamson's advice to the gravely ill. When she encourages them, for example, to "write a letter to AIDS or cancer or whatever illness they might have, and tell it everything they feel"--even to fabricate "replies" from the disease--readers are likely to consider that a serious situation is trivialized. A lesson in adjusting perception

I feared religion, feared succumbing to the opiate of the masses. The word "God" troubled me, even while I sought a deeper spirituality. Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit... I blindly closed my mind to anything in Christian terms. But I was fortunate enough to pick up this book at a time in my life when I was beginning to shed many of my judgements, and consider faith not by how others may abuse it or be shackled by it, but how it might empower me to find a deeper happiness. It all started with me re-stumbling upon a quote I read five years ago on how we feared not our inadequacy, but our strength. And it ended up with me finishing this book minutes ago and my mind screeching to a halt, "What? It's over? I need more!" Only the whole point of the book was telling me I don't need to read more, I just need to act on what resonated with me from the words so recently imbibed.

I rather doubt I'll ever consider myself Christian. But when you translate the concept of God from a bearded Old Testament crotchety and vengeful powerhouse to the raw and unadulterated purity of love... I don't need to read the Bible to find answers. When the idea of Jesus isn't so much the one and only Son of God, but a state of grace each and everyone of us can become through the shedding of fear... I can relate. When the word Christ is us used to speak to the fact that all of us are connected, rather than a fixation on crucifixion... I can open my mind a crack more. And the concept of the Holy Spirit as the guiding force that allows us to replace fear and its derivatives with love for ourselves and one another... alright, finally Christianity makes at least a lick of sense.

Does everything in these pages resonate to me? I'm not sure, but it doesn't need to. The whole point as there is no single right answer, beyond the fact that love is always the right answer. But going to church on Sunday, believing in Jesus, living a life of abstaining from all physical joys or looking upon others or ourselves with judgement and shame... not a prerequisite to finding wisdom in these pages. I would finish a chapter, and the whole world would seem to make more sense. Colors looked better, and I would sink into a feeling of peace is never felt before. The book calls my shift in perception a miracle. I don't think I'm capable of disagreeing on that point. As the author says, this is only the beginning, not the destination. I don't know if I'll read or undertake A Course in Miracles, but I do know that this companion, this interpretation, has changed my world for the better.

I had been in a dead end relationship for a good number of years. I wanted to keep it going but the other side of me wanted to just end the relationship. I hoped and prayed that one day the relationship would cease to exist. It was then that I came across the is wonderful book, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of a Course in Miracles. I quickly took to it and thought that all these years I had the power all along to end the unhappiness that I had been experiencing. I was so relieved yet happy to know that the universe was not in charge of me changing but instead it was all in my hands to make the needed changes.

Soon after reading this book, I came along to the other book called Manifestation Magic: Attracting Abundant Wealth, Incredible Health, Great Relationships, and Limitless Success Into Your Life. This book was a lot more in detail about the various things that we are able to change and turn around in our lives. The biggest of these is that we actually have the power to reverse illness. This concept totally blew my mind and made me wonder what else I had been missing out on in life. The power is within all of us and after reading this book, I was quickly able to see ways that we are able to affect the course of our life on a regular basis.

While these books alone can give you a lot of insight, these two together help to unlock the whole mystery that is set in front of a person. Regardless of what the real secret is that unlocks all of the mysteries of life, you need to just know that the answer is a lot closer than you might expect it to be.

Beautifully written, this is one of the most influential books I've read and provides a basis for spirituality in a language that clear, yet poetic. Beyond that, it is a practical guide to removing the things that block goodness in our lives and is immediately actionable. The real beauty lies in the understanding that there is nothing to "do", but instead only a new way to look at your life which helps the reader get out of their own way.

Disturbed............Yet...Extremely Aroused

I JUST finished this book, and I must say, it was excellent indeed. So much so that I feel compelled to review it. I'm soooo glad I bought AHF.

I was very skeptical at first about purchasing it. *Sidenote* (BSB-You really need to reevaluate your pricing. Not Every book you put out is worth 9.99. Just saying--but that's real talk. These are sketchy times and a girl's gotta eat, read, and buy cute accessories. I've been taking my chances on more economical reads lately-and there are plenty of good ones out there.)

Nonetheless, I'm absolutely ecstatic with THIS purchase. I was doubly hesitant about buying due to the context. The Mommy/little girl concept threw me, and I've read quite a bit of BDSM. Didn't think that dynamic would interest me. However, it was lovely and amazing! I was hooked by the second page. It had me LOLing quite frequently and immediately aroused and blushing in the next instant. I never thought I'd like something like it, but I was riveted by the romance between Suzy & her Mami. This was a rare D/s tale in which, oddly, I could see myself in either the H/h role. It was a most pleasant surprise. The bondage and pain aspect of it was just the right amount. Not too much or over the top and always with nuanced descriptions of Suzy's psychological state. Although it was written in first person, the other characterizations were well fleshed out. Mami had the most nurturing nature. Liam was an excellent friend. One of Suzy's playmates (I won't spoil it by saying who) is nicely redeemed. Even though I started with reservations, somewhere along the way, I realized Suzy's relationship with her Mami was pretty much like any other relationship in the life. It was just a different kind of special...

I've read 2 of Weatherspoon's other books (the 2 in her vamp series-and they're decent-I've read AT LEAST one book from probably a couple hundred different vamp series, so I'm super hard to impress on that front), but I can definitely see how her craft has progressed and continues to improve. I think she hit a bull's eye on this erotic romance. I loved watching how the love-albeit quickly-evolves between Suzy & Mami P. The ending was quick and easy without being rushed, and it left me feeling gratified.

Final Thoughts: Would I recommend this one? Oh, absolutely. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll notice I read a lot, and my choices are ALL over the place. Not just lesbian, not just erotica or romance even. I generally CRINGE at 1st person stories and series based on one character/couple. This is one of those stories that I truly look forward to reading again. Not only that, I also actually wouldn't mind reading more about Suzy & Pilar's sexcapades. So...In case you're still wondering.. BUY. THIS. BOOK!!! You won't be disappointed. Unless you have something against D/s, ridiculously, incredibly fantastic g-o-g sex, or a hot multicultural cast of characters, you'll be satisfied with the decision.

A very touching love story

This book introduced me to the world of Mommies and their little girls, but that was only part of it. This variation on D/s was a whopping eye-opener for me and the primary couple was beyond fantastic. I apologize, but I need to publicly extol both Rebekah Weatherspoon and Bold Strokes Books right up front. I cannot personally vouch for the accuracy of this lifestyle as presented, but I can praise to the universe the 110 percent believability of the women depicted and spot on lifelike tangibility of the high powered work scenario.

Suzanne Kim has a Korean father and a Jamaican mother, but that wonderfully and tenderly rarely becomes an issue...a truly remarkable testament to the author. Suzy needs to find a Mommy and she knows her way around the `digital world' so she plans out a highly commendable strategy and off she goes. The account of her previous Domme is somewhat horrific, but it only goes to show how spectacular Suzy's new relationship is right from the start. If I had a `little girl', I would really want Suzy to be her best friend.

Pilar attaches a photo depicting a gorgeous Latin woman along with her elegantly brief posting on Kinklife.com that speaks right to Suzy's heart and probably dozens of others. From the start through the essential crisis moment, Pilar and Suzy's relationship provided a fabulously engaging, provocative, and soul-stirring story. I love it when I cannot put down what I am reading for almost anything and this book easily fit the bill. It would be an honor to have Pilar as a friend or associate. She was amazing and oh so human.

Let me say without hesitation that everyone should read this story. However, probably folks who are more comfortable with sexually provocative f/f and D/s relationships will be completely satisfied. Nevertheless, I cannot imagine anyone with an open heart, curious nature, or passion for reading not enjoying this magnificent book. I am going to be redundant and say I totally recommend this!

I loved this book. It was a wonderful love story. It was sweet, sexy and down right hilarious at times. I wasn't sure I could get into the story based on the specific type of Dom/Sub relationship but I totally did. The sex scenes were HOT and frequent with just the right amount of kink. I really liked the main characters and there chemistry. This author is one of my favorites. The first book I read of her's was Better Off Red - (the BEST vampire story I've ever read) and I've been hooked on her ever since. I'm already looking forward to whatever's next...

The "fundamentals" part in its title is totally true, it covers the foundation level of requirements engineering, no less, no more. Though there are plenty of topics and concepts in this book, I think it does not go deep into any of them, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I rate this book with 4 stars because it was all I had to study to pass the CPRE FL exam, so it served its purpose. However, it's not the book I'd recommend to someone who was looking for a practice guide or learn more about RE than the average people in the industry. All the examples in the book, including the UML diagrams, are for dummies, that's annoying.
