If you're a Bimmer fan and want to know all about the Company's detailed product development cycle or, alternatively a current/imminent Z4 owner, then this is absolutely for you!

The details and content are fantastic and you will completely understand the philosophy behind the car, the challenging technical decisions and compromises and ultimately the whole spirit of the beast.

So, a "Must Buy" if you fall into these categories as I do, but probably not a book for the casual fan - a little expensive and (obviously) niche in appeal.

Beautiful and informative book for Z4 owners

I love the background on design of the Z4 and the pictures used to support the text are wonderful. This book was written just before or after the premier of the Z4 in 2003, so it's somewhat dated. No info at all on the changes to made to the Z4 after 2005 or the MZ. It's not a repair manual but has good info on what you can expect for performance of the car and it's major systems. I would buy the book again.

Solid and accessible work.

In this book, Else Roesdahl provides an overview of the history of the Viking age as well as a very detailed account of Viking life. This is one of the better books on the subject and I would highly recommend it.

Ms Roesdahl bases her work on literary and archeological sources. Some of the work may be somewhat dated (compared to recent studies of, for example, Norse women's dress) and fairly general, but the book as a whole seems very solid. I would further recommend the following books to people to be read for further information:

A History of the Vikings by Gwyn Jones (THE leading history of the Viking age).

Reading the Past: Runes by R. I. Page (a look at how Elder and Viking-age Runic alphabets were used).

Everyday Life in the Viking Age by Jacqueline Simpson (A work with a great deal of overlap to this one)

and

Gods and Myths of Northern Europe by H. R. E. Davidson (A look at Viking-age religion).

However, the above works are more specialized than this current work. While they provide a great deal more depth in their areas, they lack some of the bigger picture. Thus I would recommend reading this book first and then looking into the above titles.

Let's go a Viking

This book covers just about everything about the vikings from their language, art, religion, government, ships, clothing, expiditions all over Europe, weapons and warfare, homes and other aspects of these northern people. The author opens up your eyes to the fact that the vikings were civilized just as much as other people in those times which helps give you a new respect for these people. It's just amazing how these people went all over Europe, the Middle East and all the way to North America centuries before Christopher Columbus and spread their culture and in turn took apsects from other cultures back to Scandinavia.

There are maps which shows where the vikings travelled and there are a bunch of pictures of weapons, ships, burial mounds, artwork and rune stones. There are also two rune alphabets that they used for writing.

Some things I didn't like was that some of the subjects were rushed through and not too informative as they could have been like very little is mentioned about the military aspects of the vikings like offensive and defensive tactics whether it be about a king's army or raiding pirates. They also don't mention that much about the vikings in North America or the Middle East which I found to be very disappointing to say the least. I guess that there was so much to cover that the author couldn't fit everything in.

Overall this is a good introductory book about the vikings at a very low price. So if you want to read about the true vikings and not stereotypes about vikings being mindless, dirty heathen killers wearing horned helmets then you should get this book.

Decent overview of the Viking era

_The Vikings_ by Else Roesdahl was a fairly thorough if sometimes a little dry account of the Viking Age, a time that lasted about 300 years, from just before AD 800 until well into the 11th century. The Vikings were a tremendously influential people, playing a decisive role in many areas of Europe; their mark is still seen today in numerous loan-words in the English language; many place-names in Normandy and the British Isles; in Ireland, where they founded the island's major towns; and in Iceland and the Faeroe Islands, where they settled.

Roesdahl took great pains to show that the classic image of the Vikings as raiders, pirates, and plunderers was one-sided, a one-dimensional view that comes to us today from contemporary clerics in Western Europe (who may have been reacting more than anything to the pagan religion of the Vikings) and in tales that were elaborated on by medieval story tellers and historians, including among the Scandinavians themselves, such as with the Icelandic saga writers. Indeed in mainland Europe at least the author felt that the impact of the Viking raids have been exaggerated, and it generally made little difference if a community was plundered by the Vikings or by some other local faction. The Vikings were also farmers, merchants, poets, artists, authors, artisans, engineers, explorers (the first Europeans to discover Iceland, Greenland, and North America), and settlers as well as warlords and mercenaries (the latter notably in Ireland and in the Byzantine Empire).

The first half of the book dealt with the culture of the Scandinavians, going into great detail about their dress, jewelry, houses, cooking, food, language, writing, personal names, their use of slaves, the role of women, the role of children, rules of conduct, their politics, land transport, ships, monetary system, fortifications, warfare, religion (both the old faith and their conversion to Christianity), their art, and poetry. I would have liked more information about their ships and I found some of these sections a little tedious at times (basically like reading long lists), but there were a number of interesting things to be gleaned from it. There were many illustrations, photographs, and maps that were helpful in the text and in two inserts; I particularly liked the photos and drawings of Viking art and of their runes.

The second half of the book dealt with the Viking expansion, discussing the reasons for the expansion and their historical role in Normandy, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Ireland, England, the Baltic region, Russia, Byzantium, the Caliphate, and their settlement of Iceland, the Faeroe Islands, Greenland, and North America (for those interested in the Greenland settlement by the way I highly recommend Jared Diamond's _Collapse_ which had excellent, gripping coverage of that, much more thorough than what I found in _The Vikings_).

I found the coverage of Viking hoards intriguing. Many hoards had coins from often quite distant regions, with coins from the Caliphate and Byzantium not uncommon. Hoards were generally not found in areas where it was more common to pay with silver and coins than with goods.

Much as has been found to be the case with classic Greek and Roman statues, many Viking items were painted. Many rune stones have been found with traces of paint on them, the usual colors being black, white and red but other colors were used including blue and green. In addition the Vikings painted shields, furniture, tent poles, and building timbers, often to emphasize decoration that had been carved in low relief.

There was a small discussion of the many loan words from Old Norse, originating from the long Viking presence on English soil (indeed from 1018 to 1042 apart from a period of five years England and Denmark were ruled jointly by one king). Everyday words such as cast, knife, take, window, egg, ill, and die come from Old Norse. Some grammatical elements, such as the plural words they, them, and their also come from the Scandinavians. Some English dialects contained a great many more loan words but they are disappearing along with the dialects.

Scandinavian poetry was often quite demanding and intricate. Scaldic poetry for instance had a complicated form, using the "heroic meter," with the lines linked in alliterating pairs, the first line of each pair with two alliterating syllables, and each line required to have internal rhyme. In addition, skaldic poetry frequently referenced stories of the gods and heroes, often by using riddles or complex and subtle references that only a knowledgeable audience would appreciate. Scaldic poetry is of course well known for the kenning, examples of which include "the sweat of the sword" (blood), "the feeder of the raven" (the warrior), or more complex ones that could only be understood with reference to their mythology.

Much has been made elsewhere about the Viking raids on Irish monasteries and Roesdahl does cover that, though the reader also learns that it wasn't just Vikings that did the raiding. The abbots of several monasteries were often the only national figures in Ireland until well into the 800s, with most of Ireland divided into tiny kingdoms struggling with complex dynastic rules. Owing to the monasteries' important economic and political importance and close ties with many secular rulers, plundering and burning down monasteries was an integral part of Irish warfare; indeed monasteries sometimes fought each other in addition to being plundered by rival kings. Further complicating things, Vikings were often employed as mercenaries in the endless wars in Ireland (the Franks on the mainland of Europe did the same thing, often setting one Viking group against another). Further, some rulers exaggerated the depredations of the Vikings to enhance their own glory (one work portrayed the Viking chieftain Turgesius as a sort of "pagan super-Viking" who among other things tried to convert Ireland to the worship of Thor, the work aiming to glorify the great Irish king Brian Boru).

Not a bad book overall, it was a useful though not especially gripping overview.

He was involved in the design of industrial and utility power plants and provided consultation in steam plant operation and maintenance; in plant performance test requirements; and in the development of overall power plant specifications.

Herbert B. Lammers was a consultant for various industries which were dependent upon steam power plants for their reliable source of power. He provided expertise in the efficient combustion of various fuels and in the economic operation and maintenance of boilers and various power plant systems.

Thomas F. Lammers was a Senior Project Manager with Babcock & Wilcox Co., one of the world’s leading designers and suppliers of steam generating systems and related power plant equipment. During his 36 years with the company, Mr. Lammers had various management responsibilities in the areas of engineering, marketing, and project management. �He is the author of the Fifth through the Tenth Edition of Steam Plant Operation.

Fresh, accessible, transformative

Bestselling novels are often printed in a variety of formats throughout their lives in print. Hardcovers, paperbacks, first editions, 10th anniversary editions, deluxe editions etc. can all be expected for blockbuster classics. Is it any wonder then, that the world's all-time #1 bestselling non-fiction title - the Bible - is available in such a plethora of translations, formats, editions, and so on?

The newly released Transformation Study Bible from David C. Cook combines the fourth best-selling Bible translation (2008/2009) - the New Living Translation or NLT - with Bible teacher Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe's highly respected commentary. The NLT is a modern English translation of the Bible, featuring easy-to-read language, and is based upon a translation method that relies both upon formal equivalence techniques (word-for-word), and dynamic equivalence (thought-for-thought).

This being my first encounter with an NLT Bible, I was quite pleased with the easy-to-read, yet accurate text. After reading several important passages, I've found that this version supports a literal seven-day creation period, and in no way detracts from God's absolute sovereignty and authority over the earth and all that is within it. Though this is certainly a given for long-time NLT readers, the modern equivalencies of weights, measurements, time, etc. are a huge blessing. Easy to read without a Bible dictionary at hand for looking up formulas for translating these antiquated measurements into ones I'm familiar with, this is incredibly convenient (original measurements and such are provided in the footnotes.)

After satisfying myself with the content and theological basis of the translation itself, I turned my attention to Wiersbe's commentary. Drawn from his vast collection of popular "Be" series titles - 50 expositional Bible studies which focus upon the application of God's word to the lives of believers - this commentary is the result of over 30 years of work. I found Wiersbe's commentary to be both helpful, and accurate; whether dealing with Paul's theological writings in Romans, or narrative stretches of scripture, Wierbe's explanations are clear and balanced.

Bible `extras' include cross-references in the center column (I love these), words of Christ in red, a small, standard selection of full-colour Bible maps, preaching outlines by book, and a very respectable dictionary/concordance - the most comprehensive built-in concordance I've seen. Formally structured book outlines provide an overview of the pain points and occurrences within each portion of scripture. A conversational introduction to the book, and "Be Transformed" section help readers to discern the meaning of the book, and its potential to apply directly to their lives. The "Catalyst" sections spread throughout the text do an excellent job of focusing in on the "big picture", the overarching themes of God's plan, illumining the personal relevance of important events and sections of scripture.

Incredibly accessible, I highly recommend the Transformation Study Bible for anyone who may have read through certain portions of the Bible and wondered how what they were reading fit into God's larger plan, or how the text applied to their spiritual growth. I've only just skimmed the surface of this large volume (2300+ pages), but I'm looking forward to reading through the Bible with an increased sense of meaning, depth, and personal relevance as I continue to explore its pages.

If you're looking for an all-in-one study Bible, this just might be it! It's got cross referencing, a fairly-lengthy concordance, commentary for deeper insights into specific passages, maps, and book outlines and overviews. And my favorite part of this is the Catalyst Notes, or notes that aid the reader in personalizing and applying scripture in their own lives.

Having done inductive Bible study before, where you review a Bible book and analyze it phrase by phrase in a group setting, I must say this Bible is perfect for such a setting. You get a whole lot of insight and information packed into one book without having to lug a whole library around.

While the NLT, or New Living Translation, is not my first choice version of the Bible, I do find it easy to understand. I was interested in reading the process behind it, and appreciated the fact that it was intentionally translated for reading aloud.

Making the old new, and giving greater depth

I shyed away from this Bible because it was said that it should be for the new Christian. The Holy Spirit kept drawing me back to it, and I am so delighted with it. He gives such great depth to the familiar texts and in such a lovely way. There is a gripping excitement in the Bible overviews vs. the traditional dry though informative introductions to the books in other Bibles. It is awesome to take the journey through this Bible. I have studied seminary classes and found that exciting, and this Bible is very apprehending as well. For the new Christian, the text of the Bible is new and exciting but you will be tremendously blessed to have the knowledgeable commentary throughout this Bible to point out the meaning with emphasis on how this affects you. I love this Bible. I have many and am well pleased with this one.

The materials the Bible is made of are black milano leather with thumb index,and silver gilded edges. All the way through in and out, the Bible is elegant. It is neither particulary feminine or masculine but beautiful like fine china and silver. The layout is elegant and the commentary is of high value from Warren Wiersbe of Moody Bible Institute. He is very knowledgeable and the Bible is a glorious blend of the scholarly and the devotional. It is not too big to carry around, but not a slim line as it is 2" thick. The thumb index has silver with black type. It is both simple in design and elegant.

About the Author

P. Ronan O'Connell is Professor of Surgery and Consultant Surgeon at St Vincent's University Hospital since September 2007. He was previously Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the Royal London Hospital (1989-1990), consultant surgeon at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (1990-2007) and Newman Clinical Research Professor at UCD (2002- 2007). In 2009 he was appointed head of the Section of Surgery and Surgical Sciences at University College Dublin. Between 2011 and 2013 he was Chairman of the South East Dublin Department of Surgery.

Prof O'Connell has published widely in the areas of inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor physiology and continence. His research has been recognised by numerous awards including the Patey Prize of the Surgical Research Society (1985), the British Journal of Surgery Prize at the Association of Coloproctology Great Britain and Ireland (1995, 1997, 1999 and 2007), the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Research Prize (2007 and 2010) and the Physiological Society (2009). His research is currently funded by Science Foundation Ireland, the Bowel Disease Research Foundation of ACPGBI, Medtronic Comporation and the EU COST collaboration.

Robert D. Madoff, M.D., F.A.C.S., is Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Madoff is the holder of the Stanley M. Goldberg, MD Chair in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He is the founding director of the William C. Bernstein MD Familial Cancer Registry at the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota. Dr. Madoff is Editor-in-Chief of Diseases of the Colon & Rectum and an Executive Council Member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Dr. Madoff has published over 100 academic research papers in peer-reviewed medical journals and has authored or co-authored more than 50 textbook chapters. His scientific interests include familial colorectal cancer, benign colorectal disease, fecal incontinence, and anal intraepithelial neoplasia.

Michael J. Solomon, MSc, FRACS, FRCSI, is a consultant surgeon and Academic Head of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. He is a Clinical Professor of Surgery and Director of Colorectal Research, both for Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney and is a past the President of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia & New Zealand (CSSANZ). He was previously the Chairman of the Post-FRACS Training Board in Colorectal Surgery of RACS & CSSANZ of which he remained a member for 16 years. He has been recently on the editorial board of DCR, Colorectal Disease & Int J Colorectal Diseases and is currently a Board Member of the NSW State Cancer Institute. He has received an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland as well as an honorary membership of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland. He recently was awarded the prestigious RPA Foundation Research Medal in 2014 being the first surgeon to be given this honour.

Sir Norman S. Williams, MS, FRCS, FMedSci, FRCP, FRCP(Edin), FRCA, FDS(Hon), FACS(Hon), FRCSI(Hon), is Professor of Surgery at Barts and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry and Director of the National Centre for Bowel Research and Surgical Innovation. He trained in London, Bristol, Leeds and Los Angeles. His main clinical interests are sphincter preservation and reconstructive colorectal surgery, and his scientific interests are GI motility and anorectal physiology. He was a founding trustee and Chairman of Bowel & Cancer Research and is currently the charity’s President.

He has been President of the Society of Academic & Research Surgery, President of The Ileostomy & Internal Pouch Support Group, Chairman of the UKCCCR committee on Colorectal Cancer, President of European Digestive Surgery, President of The International Surgical Group and Vice Chairman of The British Journal of Surgery. From 2011-14 he was President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
