A grand, classic tribute to the great gagman of animation

Written more than a decade before "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" made it okay for adults to enjoy animated cartoons, Joe Adamson's labor-of-love tribute to cartoon pioneer Tex Avery is a must-have for any scholar of animation. Containing perhaps the only extensive interview with Tex Avery before his death before 1980, the book looks back on the illustrious career of a shy, quiet man whose only ambition was to make people laugh. Walt Disney and Chuck Jones are the two most famous names of the Golden Age of cartoons, but they both owe a debt to Tex Avery. In addition to the personal look at Avery's life, the book contains a complete filmography of Avery's theatrical cartoons, plus interviews with the people Tex worked with over the years. While the 1996 book "Tex Avery" by John Canemaker provided a look at the more tragic side of Avery's career (as well as a wealth of background and behind-the-scenes material), Adamson's book is still the definitive look at the fun-loving, innocent personality of the creator of Droopy Dog, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the man who broke the shackles of "realism" in animation by declaring, "In a cartoon you can do anything!"

A poor buy

This book is worthless because :
- it offers little insight into Avery's genius
- it's short on the man's biography
- it focuses too much on the cartoons
- a large portion of it is made up of interviews with Avery and others; it's easy to write books that way, using text that's already written
- every picture is in black and white; not a single one in colour; would you like to watch Avery's cartoons in b & w ?
- it is printed on mediocre paper; when you're reading a page you are very much aware of the pictures printed on the other side of the page
- it's grossly overpriced

A Tribute to Tex Avery

Tex Avery was one of the greatest cartoonists and comic geniuses that ever lived. Part of his success in the animation industry was doing "not trying to compete with Disney, but rather do what Disney wouldn't dare to do". He was more interested in getting a laugh out of his audience.
Unfortunately, there are so few good history books out there about non-Disney animation studios. Part of that is that Disney has the best track record of preserving its history, that not very many other studios come close. Another reason might be a lack of interest with the general public.
Most of this book is filled with essays by fans and other filmmakers. It really should have been more of a biography. What makes this book worth the purchase alone are the interviews with Tex Avery himself and two with his key personnel, especially since these are the only interviews with Tex that are available to the public (to my knowledge). There is also a complete filmography with anecdotes for some titles (which is outdated, since the dates for the WB cartoons are based on copyright dates rather than the release dates). Another downside is that all the images are black and white. There is another book on Tex Avery by John Canemaker that should be worth checking out.
Here's hoping that another well researched book on Tex Avery will be published in the future (as well as more interviews).

Ready to go find my treasure.

What a great book. Mark is very humerus. I didn't expect to be both informed and entertained. I picked the book up because ever since childhood I've dreamed of treasure hunting with a metal detector. The price of a detector was always what stopped me, but after reading Mark Smith I'm inspired to sell anything valuable I've got laying around so I can find a detector and go out hunting for treasure, just like I've dreamed about since my childhood. He encourages you to just get started even if you start with a basic cheaper machine and boy am I. I've been eyeballing a $4,000 machine for years but haven't taken the plunge for the price, but with the info I've learned from his book, I feel I can safely buy a used decent start up machine for a few hundred. Although, admittedly, he doesn't advice this for beginners.
No more videos and books and dreaming for me. Mark, thank you for the fun read, I'm off to find my treasure.

The best book for a great hobby!!!

What a great way to start a new hobby. I bought this as a gift for my brother but started reading it bored at work. I felt myself wanting to try this exciting new hobby after reading only a few pages. Now my brother has to wait until I finish it. It has tons of tips, lots of informative information and is written in an easy to read format. I felt like I knew this guy after reading it. I would recommend this book to anyone who may have an interest in Metal Detecting. This book has it all. Thanks Mark Smith

Mr. Lewis makes no pretense this is a textbook, and I'm sure it wouldn't suffice in that role. Rather, "100 Statistical Tests in R" provides a solid reference, with many worked examples, on inference procedures that many scientists and researchers need. Usually they need them without all the theoretical trappings, and that's where this book excels: "Just the tests, ma'am."

The presentation is spare and clean, with solid literature research. The R code appears to be up to date (at time of release, anyway), and package references are valid. An amazingly wide range of examples is shown, from communicating with whales to stock trading, game theory to medical applications.

My concerns are not with the quality of the test procedures or the code. I tried quite a few of the procedures, and found them to be functional and clear. The organization of the tests into groups covering correlation/causation, hypothesis testing, independence, and more is useful, and clearly shown early in the volume. I especially enjoy having more than one option even within a single test.

I am always a bit worried about efforts to enable sophisticated analyses and inference without sufficient context or support for the less-sophisticated researcher, who is tempted to use the procedure as a "black box" and then believe they know enough to decide and act. Many of these tests are like carving an object with a supremely sharp knife; if you're not a master carver you can lose some skin, or perhaps a finger. For those who need these tests but haven't serious grounding in their foibles, I strongly recommend developing a relationship with a practicing statistician and seeking guidance.

These concerns do not reduce the usefulness of this presentation of statistical tests. The author makes no claims about one's ability to correctly infer in a particular situation. His guidance is otherwise.

If you're looking for a listing of the mathematical equations for all these tests, you'll need to look elsewhere. However, if you're in a technical, research or development setting and use R (or have access to R coders to help), I heartily recommend this book to you.

A Handy Desk Reference Guide

This is a very good list of statistical tests. It provides some basic application and usage examples and then an example of how to run the test in R.

I would suggest you have a solid understanding of statistics before purchasing as you will both have to know what you're looking for and the underlying concepts behind them; this is not "Statistics in R for Dummies". A knowledge of R is not required, but should of course be reccomended...

You get a lot more than the $3 price tag out of this, if you know how to use it....
