An All-Time Great Spiritual Text

When I first read "The Method of the Siddhas" in 1973, I knew it was a great spiritual book; but until a few years later when I actually began to practice the "method," the Way of Radical Understanding and Relational Enquiry, as described by author-guru Franklin Jones (later to become Bubba Free John, Da Free John, and finally Adi Da), I didn't know how great. Eventually, I realized that the first chapter of the book, "Understanding," was the single greatest chapter ever written on the gnostic practice of directly and immediately living Truth (and obviating the self-contraction).

Adi Da initially, and naively, believed that the ordinary people who came to him could easily learn and practice the Way of Radical Understanding. But in a few years it became apparent that none of his disciples really "understood" (to the point of Heart-realization). And not long before his death (in 2008), he bemoaned the fact that no one had "understood." I was never a Daist (a devotee of his and member of his community), but I do "understand" and still practice the Way of Radical Understanding, regularly abiding in, and as, the Heart--even though I have not cut the Heart-knot and therefore am not fully, unbrokenly, en-Light-ened.

The "Method of the Siddhas" is a mind-blowing spiritual text--so profound that the renowned Zen scholar Alan Watts, after reading it, declared (with regard to Adi Da): "I have been waiting for an Avatar all my life, and now he has come." Watts died not long after his statement, so we don't know what his take would have been had he lived to see, years later, the heavy criticism directed at Da's "Crazy Wisdom" behavior and spiritual cult. Ken Wilber, the acclaimed Integral philosopher, also raved about Da, upholding him as the most enlightened guru on the planet. But once Da and Daism began to come under assault from disaffected devotees claiming personal abuse, Wilber effectively disassociated himself from the religion.

My take regarding Da and Daism is: don't throw the baby out with the bath water. With this in mind, I cannot recommend "The Method of the Siddhas" highly enough--and for two cents (the cost for a used copy of another version of this out-of-print classic), plus shipping, you can find out why many consider Adi Da a spiritual genius, and why, as Da put it, "only radical (or gone-to-the-root) understanding avails."

In this book, Adi Da elucidates the fundamentals of "radical" self-understanding, which principles are the foundation of His Revelation of the Way of Adidam. These include:

*The basic principle of egoic existence, the search, which Avatar Adi Da later Communicated in its simplest terms: "You want to feel good--because you feel bad. Therefore, you are seeking--in order to feel good."

*The essential ego-fault and the means for overcoming it: (1) Truth cannot be Realized by seeking for it. The seeking itself is the problem. When there is no seeking, Truth (or Reality) is Obvious. (2) Freedom (or Divine Liberation) is not dependent on any objective entity or process. Freedom (or Divine Liberation) Is Always Already the Case.

*The single logic of egoic life: The logic (or process) of separation itself, of enclosure and immunity, informs every function of the living being, every experience, every act, every event.

*The Grace-Given process of "radical" self-understanding: (1) Observe your own self-contracting activity. Understand your own self-contracting activity. Transcend your own self-contracting activity.

THE SECOND BOOK OF ADI DA (THEN KNOWN AS "FRANKLIN JONES")

Adi Da Samraj (1939-2008) was born Franklin Albert Jones, but was also known as Bubba Free John, Da Free John, Da Love-Ananda, etc., until from 1991 until his death he settled on Adi Da Love-Ananda Samraj [or just "Adi Da"]. He became a famous and controversial spiritual teacher beginning in the 1970s counterculture. His movement has been criticized as cultic, abusive, etc., although his followers remain devoted to him, and often live in one of his five "Adidam" churches (including his main one on an island in Fiji). He wrote many books, including Garbage and the Goddess, Four Fundamental Questions, Aham Da Asmi (Beloved, I Am Da), Ruchira Avatara Gita: The Avataric Way of the Divine Heart-Master, Da Love-Ananda Gita: The Free Avataric Gift of the Divine Love-Bliss, Hridaya Rosary: Four Thorns of Heart-Instruction, Eleutherios (The Only Truth That Sets The Heart Free), and his autobiography, The knee of listening [revised as The Knee Of Listening: The Divine Ordeal of the Avataric Incarnation of Conscious Light], etc.

He states, "What I call the Heart IS consciousness. It is called Atman, the very Self or Nature of the apparent individual. It is not a separate organ or a separate faculty. It is identical to what is called Brahman, the formless, absolute, omnipresent Divine Reality. It is very consciousness, absolute bliss, unqualified existence. It is intuition of unspeakable God. Anything secondary that we could call 'mind,' body or brain, any function at all is contained within the 'Heart' like an event in a universe." (Pg. 10) He adds, "If you understand what you call your formal meditation, that understanding is meditation. The understanding of your activity is meditation. If you have an inclination to do some particular kind of sitting... whatever, all of that is an activity that you are already TENDING to do... The point is the understanding of that whole ordinary motivation, the process in this moment that is producing this particular tendency that is 'formal meditation.' Intelligence is the fundamental meditation." (Pg. 21) He notes, "The Truth that ALREADY is the case is the Truth from this one's point of view. I live very naturally in the human world, and its responsibilities do not make me 'unspiritual.' Its responsibilities are a creative manifestation, requiring intelligence." (Pg. 52)

He says about attachment to drugs, "it has no purpose whatsoever in real spiritual life. It is an aggravation. It toxifies the body, creates one illusion on top of the next. The person involved with drugs and its illusory 'spiritual' culture is back and forth every day. He is not ready for Satsang. Drugs are a heavy alternative until he understands the limitations of that bondage. The other forms of stimulation men use, like tobacco, alcohol, coffee and such, should be abandoned as well." (Pg. 66) He suggests, "the sex-function, in Satsang, is self-transcending... And such fulfillment is realized without ... the search for celibacy... Loving human communion is the HUMAN fulfillment of the sex-function. Therefore, marriage is a most appropriate condition who live in Satsang with the Guru. It is appropriate. It does not make you 'spiritual.'" (Pg. 74)

He asserts, "The Guru is not some impotent old rascal. The Guru should be able to populate the earth. The Guru is strong. He is alive. He enjoys mastery over the sex-impulse. He may, as a spontaneous practice, be entirely celibate, even in marriage. But he is not in any case empty or obstructed in relation to the life-force." (Pg. 112) He adds, "People are suffering from their idiot Gurus. If I see a phony telling everybody he is God-Exclusive, I am likely to tell you so. Why should I stand for such lies, that exploitation of men, that reinforcement of suffering?" (Pg. 119) Later, he adds, "Dead Gurus can't kick a__!" (Pg. 225)

He advises, "My conditions are not some massive thing. I do not ask you to become a saint before you come to me. Mine are simple, natural, ordinary requirements, but they are sufficient to turn away those who are not ready for Satsang, while they attract those for whom Satsang can live." (Pg. 145) He adds, "Spiritual life is CONSCIOUS life. It doesn't really exist until your consciousness comes into play, becomes active. Spiritual life is an intelligent process. It is not a kind of mediumship, where you simply enjoy certain experiences, certain energies, a certain shakti." (Pg. 189) He adds, "The most difficult thing for a man to achieve is ordinariness. But the primary condition of Satsang, of true life, is the realization of ordinariness." (Pg. 295)

Adi Da is somewhat of an "acquired taste," and he definitely doesn't appeal to everyone. Still, his earliest books (such as this one, "Garbage and the Goddess," etc.) are perhaps of more interest to the average "seeker" than his later ones.

A RATHER “STEAMY” ACCOUNT OF RESNICK’S FRIENDSHIP WITH NICOLE AND SIMPSON

Author Faye Resnick wrote in the Foreword to this 1994 book, “I will, with all the accuracy and all the honesty I can muster, write about the events that led up to this awful crime. In doing this, I know I must be unflinchingly truthful about myself. Writing this book has been painful… But to tell Nicole’s story honestly, I must also tell you mine. Some of what I say can never be corroborated… But on all that I hold sacred, I promise you the truth. I know that powerful allies of O.J. Simpson will do everything in their power to discredit me… This book is dedicated to the most wonderful friend I have ever known, and to women everywhere who are trapped n corrosive and humiliating relationships like the one Nicole did not survive… Nicole, you have no one to speak for you. Let me try…”

She begins the second chapter with the statement, “One of my most vivid memories… is the night I saw the other side of O.J.’s happy, smiling face. When I tell you about the last times I saw that face, you’ll know why I believe O.J. killed my best friend.” (Pg. 7)

Of the funeral, she says, “I sat down next to O.J. … I said to him, ‘O.J., what happened?’ He never moved, but again I saw the jaw muscles clenching… Then words that are seared into my memory forever spilled out like an unbidden cry.’ ‘Girl… you---out of all of them---know that I loved her too much.’ I was stunned.” (Pg. 25)

She says, “Talking about that awful night with Keith in 1992, Nicole said, ‘When I told O.J. he had no business interfering with my life, he turned it around and said he was concerned that our kids, who were upstairs sleeping, could wake up and walk downstairs. He said it was the wrong thing to be having sex with the kids in the house.’” (Pg. 49)

Resnick admits, “I have been in the Betty Ford Clinic twice and the Exodus Recovery Center once over an eight-year period for cocaine addiction. I honestly believed that I had beaten it after my second Betty Ford trip, but the pressure of watching Nicole’s tragedy weakened me. That is not an excuse; it’s just an opinion.” (Pg. 59)

She suggests, “To understand why O.J. was so compulsively attracted to Nicole, you’d have to understand his mind-set. O.J. seemed to hate being black and… avoided any real contact with the black community… Marguerite was probably the last black woman O.J. would ever be with… Nicole was not the first white woman in O.J.’s life, nor was she the last. Before they met, O.J. had made it a point to be seen with as many beautiful women as possible---and it was generally understood that only whites need apply. His flirtations and affairs while he was married to Nicole, as well as during their separation, invariably were with women who… definitely were a lighter shade of pale.” (Pg. 88-89)

After Simpson joked about the fact that “my wife’s biggest fear in life is frogs, and I’ve just ended up starring in a TV series called ‘The Frogmen’!,” she notes, “Two minutes later, O.J. got up and left… [Nicole] turned to me and said, ‘I don’t think that’s funny… It’s cruel. I’m afraid this man will kill me some day.’ It was one of those shocking statements that are so unbelievable you wonder if you heard right.” (Pg. 143-144) Of the next day, she says, “I will never forget the look on her face when she repeated her astounding statement of the day before. ‘I feel that if we get back together, he’ll end up killing me. I don’t think he’s changed.’” (Pg. 145)

Of the infamous incident in 1989, she recounts Nicole telling her, “Faye, that was the worst night of my life. For hours, I don’t know how long, O.J. would watch TV, then he’d come back, open the closet door, hit me some more, then lock me up again. I was so scared. I wanted to die… I don’t know what was worse, the beatings or that awful FEAR of waiting for him to come back and do it again.” (Pg. 148-149)

Later, she continues speaking for Nicole, “If I’m with him, and I complain about his women, he’s going to beat me. And maybe someday he’ll beat me to death… So that’s my choice, Faye. I think he’ll kill me if I stay with him, so if he’s going to kill me because I’m leaving, I may as well face it now.” (Pg. 171-172)

She says that Simpson later told her, “If she’s with another man, I’ll kill her. You tell her she’d better play her role and look like my wife until August. Stay away from any man until August. You tell her that, Faye!” (Pg. 175)

She also asserts, “we were sipping our cappuccino with a bunch of the Starbucks boys… Nicole had a crush on one of them… His name was Ron Goldman, and the first time I saw him I told Nicole, ‘… he’s absolutely gorgeous!’ Nicole was pleased to hear my judgment. But looking back on it, I feel a lot of guilt… it’s just something that will bother me forever. Let me answer the burning question, once and for all: Nicole and Ron Goldman were not lovers… What is true is that, inevitably, Nicole was going to ‘do’ Ron. It was something that was going to happen. But Nicole was in no rush.” (Pg. 185-186)

She also purports to report a single sexual relationship she had with Nicole: “No, it never happened again. The only discussion Nicole and I ever had was to acknowledge how inevitable it had seemed.” (Pg. 197-199) She adds, “The night Nicole and I were together was unique. We had both been disillusioned and deeply hurt by men and had lost trust in everything but each other. We needed the warmth, closeness, and safety of each other’s arms. However, let me make it clear that neither Nicole nor I were or ever could be [lesbian].” (Pg. 202)

It’s difficult to believe many parts of Resnick’s book. [Why would she not make more an effort to help her “best friend” get out of an abusive relationship like this one?] But “caveat emptor”…

Practical Experience with Organic Growing Shared

Don came across my website, [ ... ] , liked what he saw about growing more nutritionally-rich foods, and asked me to review his book. I enjoyed reading Learned by the Fencepost because it has practical tips from someone who helped get the organic movement going way back in the 1950's. Don paid attention to what happened in the field and garden, and learned from experience. He ran his own experimental trials to prove what worked.
I appreciate his promotion of the use of soft rock phosphate from Florida. I recommend that soil amendment to clients regularly, but I run a comprehensive soil analysis so I know exactly how much of each element is needed for optimal balance. Don recommends taking soil samples to the local extension office, however my side-by-side comparisons of soil analyses and recommendations from the extension "service" and from a good independent lab were vastly different. Don criticizes "the USDA and the government" for pushing the use of chemical fertilizers--and I totally agree with him. However, the extension "service" is an extension of the (corrupt)government and the information I have gotten from them is often misleading. I believe that the agriculture chemical corporations, who control government to a large extent, do not want growers to be able to grow supremely healthy crops which don't need their chemicals.
Don talks about his experience in Virginia starting his organic garden. It took him 5 years to get his soil in good enough condition to produce well. With the proper soil analyses and amendments he could have saved himself a lot of time, trouble and heartache with getting his soil to perform well. And his produce could have been more nutrient rich also.
As Don says, "Observation, logic, an inquisitive mind, and Mother Nature are valuable teachers in farming and gardening, as well as in many other aspects of our lives." Let's all keep learning and moving forward together!

Outstanding book and such a joy to read!!

What a very, very special book!! I was really excited to learn about the process that Donald used to find the very best type of farming to get the most outstanding crops. What determination he had to stick to it for several years until he found the exact formula that would produce the best vegetables and with almost no insects. That is a winning combination. I am praying that more and more large farms will adopt these methods so that more of us can purchase this wonderful produce. I have been doing a great deal of research in what foods are best for us and without a doubt, we will only benefit our bodies if we eat organic. I also am a huge believer in supplements because the produce from this new way of farming is so inferior than it was 50 years ago when Donald was doing all his own research. What a perfect stocking stuffer this would be for Christmas!

Interesting and Educational

Don puts his years of gardening wisdom in this book. His real life stories draw you in - they are so interesting and he even mentions awards he has won. In addition to teaching you about what does and does not work, how to garden organically - truly organic - he gives many tips and suggestions - there are so many insights to glean from this book. I cannot wait to start my own organic garden.... inspirational and aspirational.

Good bare-bones quick summary of the original book by Charles Koch. If you want to get some insight into the mind of "The Evil Koch Brothers", I would suggest reading the original book and then forming your own opinion instead of what Huff Post and others try to feed you. If you are reading this strictly for some insights as to how to run a business...well...Charles and David Koch are worth about 80 BILLION betwen the two of them...I don't know..do YOU think they have anything to teach you?
