Van Voorst, Professor of New Testament Studies at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, and former professor of religion at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, has written frequently on religious studies in noted journals and reference works. In addition, he has authored numerous books, including six with Cengage Learning: RELG: WORLD, 2nd Edition; READINGS IN CHRISTIANITY, 3rd Edition; ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD SCRIPTURES, 8th Edition; ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD SCRIPTURES: EASTERN RELIGIONS; ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD SCRIPTURES: WESTERN RELIGIONS; and READING THE NEW TESTAMENT TODAY, now also in a Chinese version. Primary sources of Christianity

This book includes many important primary sources of Christianity to convey a sense of the history and growth of Christianity. He breaks the history up into Biblical foundations (Old and New Testament), ancient Christianity, Medieval times, reformation, early modern Christianity, and modern Christianity. Within each era the division of the writings into Events, Institution, Teaching, Ethics, and Relations may be a bit artificial (for example is the beginning of Monasticism more about events, institution, or teaching?), but does help organize the readings. Some of the dates on the sources are not clearly given, but generally this is not a problem as the general era is clear.
Van Voorst should be congratulated for including womens' perspective throughout the history, and at least some writings from the Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which often seems neglected in this country. He often does a great job of pairing primary sources, for example pairing Anselm's scholastic argument on proving the existence of God with Thomas Aquinas Summa Theologiae. Everyone will probably find missing some of their sources (like Dante), but there is a chance of discovering new authors shaping Christianity (like Hildegard of Bingen). Whoever reads these texts will find some new understanding of how Christianity has grappled with some of the same historic issues of faith and works, but has also dealings with new topics such as bioengineering.

Great source for primary writings.

I purchased this book for a class: Introduction to Christianity. We were assigned several readings from this book and other sources, which we then had to write a page about for each class.

Style: 4/5

The cover is a nice bronze and sepia color. The book itself is organized very well. Each writing has a short introduction and sources at the end, but in no way does it feel cluttered.

Entertainment: 3/5

If you're a history buff, this book will obviously be more fun for you. For me however, It was a rather boring read. The book is extensive, and I wouldn't say that every writing is totally necessary.

Usefulness: 5/5

Every single writing is a primary source. Not only that, but biased writings are often directly followed by a counter-writing that is also a primary source! For those who need good citations for a paper, or those just interested in the evolution of Christianity, (hehe) this is the book for you.

Helpful book for teachers

I bought this book to help me prepare for my National Board Assessment Center exercise in Art. It was very helpful to me as I am in a school district that places NO emphasis on art and it had been years since I really thought about how to use art in the classroom. Informative, expert, immensely useful

This is an immensely informative and practical reference, which is pleasantly surprising - at first appearance it looks like an academic (i.e. theoretical) work.
The authors' premise is that biometric systems, relying on fingerprints, retinal scans, speech patterns and facial thermography, are a highly effective solution for the problems of network security and authentication. He then explains how to assess the most effective form of these biometric methods which will meet an organisations' needs, how to implement such systems and understand their overall strengths and weaknesses.
Although security is a highly-important issue, the contents are of value to those interested in biometric systems in general - for example, this is a technology of interest to labour-hire organisations. Such companies may place many hundreds of casual employees on remote client worksites and need verifiable means to determine the employee's attendance and hours worked - in short, an unfoolable version of the old "time clock" punch-card system.
The authors detail at length the foundational mathematics or principles behind each biometric system covered, and spend equal time describing genuine implementations - using readily available (commercial) hardware and software. Helpful screenshots, tables and diagrams accompany these practical components and give full confidence that the reader can reproduce the results themselves (with the appropriate hardware and software, of course). For software developers, sample source code is also provided showing how the biometric devices can be managed from within Visual Basic programs.
Completing the book is a companion Web site with updated source code, articles and case studies.

Biometric Puzzles Revealed

There is a lot of mystery and myth concerning biometrics and the authors did a good job of exposing the facts and revealing the truth. "Implementing Biometric Security" breaks down the various forms of biometric technology into easily understandable blocks of information. Very few books breakdown the different forms of biometrics to the point that this one does. This is a true guide in helping you choose between biometric authentication systems. I'd recommend it a must read prior to investing time or money into a biometric business solution. The book is chock full of data. I found myself learning something new on almost every turn of the page. The good news is that I found it a fairly easy read and a great reference book. As a bonus, there is a companion site that has some readily available programs to get your biometric effort up and running. An excellent book for your work or personal IT library.

Now growing frail, his last wish is to return to the river and finish his last painting, entitled River Boy. Grandpa calls Jess his muse; she counts on him to cheer her on at her swim meets. As they commence their vacation, the unfinished painting troubles Jess, more so as she begins to sense a mysterious presence on the river. Then she begins to see the river boy himself, waiting for her, asking for her assistance in a special mission. The narrative builds too slowly, and some of the passages seem out of character or overblown (e.g., a few times Jess's parents mention that they feel they're neglecting her; Jess tells the river boy, "Stay a mystery a little longer. I can't take any more truth right now"). However, Bowler's (The Midget) 1998 Carnegie Medal winner succeeds in conveying the strong bond between Jess and her grandfather; as the novel unfolds, she realizes they have more in common than she'd ever imagined. Grade 5-8-Emilia Fox's splendid reading of British author Tim Bowler's beautifully written book makes this a highly worthwhile addition to library collections. Part naturalistic meditation on death and loss, part mystical Twilight Zone-style adventure, River Boy tells of 15-year-old Jess who loves two things: swimming and her ornery yet compassionate artist grandfather. The story begins with the family preparing a visit to grandpa's boyhood home in the British countryside. Grandfather suffers from poor health and a bad heart, and most of the text deals with Jess preparing herself for his death. He works on a melancholy painting called "River Boy," but no matter how long Jess studies it she can't see the boy. The plot takes a strange turn when Jess encounters the actual River Boy, a wise being who may or may not be real. River Boy is a poetic, tender story that packs a tremendous punch at the end as the title character helps Jess achieve a deeper spiritual understanding. The grandfather is an unforgettable character, cranky yet lovable, tough yet vulnerable, and Fox's interpretation of his crackly voice is right on target. Although the narrative drags a bit in the middle when grandfather's talkative old childhood friend slows things down, patient listeners will be rewarded in the end. The production is crystal clear. Agood addition to units on death and loss.

Grandfather Granddaugter Relationship

Jess' grandfather is acting very strangely. He has always been grumpy and irritable--that's no different from usual. He has always been a painter, too, obsessed with finishing a painting he's started and especially nasty to those around him until he does manage to find the inspiration to finish it. But the painting he's working on now is not in his usual style, and this one has a name: "River Boy." He's never named one of his paintings before. To make matters even stranger, he has insisted his son and daughter-in-law and granddaughter Jess go on a vacation to the place he lived growing up. The family drives for hours and moves into a small cottage by a river that starts up beyond them and eventually flows down into the ocean. Jess, an excellent swimmer who craves time in the water, loves the location and the river.

Jess' parents are worried, though. Before they left, Jess' grandfather had a heart attack. He insisted on being let out of the hospital in order to go on vacation, but their vacaton spot is so secluded, they worry he will have another heart attack and won't be able to get to a hospital again in time. Her grandfather is fixated on one thing--finishing the painting he's started. It seems to be the only goal he has left in life, but it becomes more and more difficult as he gets weaker and weaker. Jess is torn. She doesn't know how to help him or what he needs. Furthermore, there seems to be a mystery surrounding this place. She keeps seeing a boy out in the river at the strangest hours, a boy she suspects is watching her. Who is he? Is he really as mysterious as Jess thinks, or is her imagination simply running away with her?

I really liked the relationship between Jess and her grandfather. They were very close despite his crabbiness. It was nice that Jess was able to look beyond that. I thought the ending of this book was really good. Things really came together and made sense. However, I didn't like the way Jess' grandfather treated her father; that made me dislike the character of the grandfather a little bit.

The book I chose to read and review was River Boy by Tim Bowler. It is a very interesting book to read which is very surprising to me because the cover made it seem like a boring book (never judge a book by it's cover. The story had a mystery to it that you couldn't figure out until the very end of the book. I like how the author used the river flowing like humans' life and death. Our birth is where the river forms and our struggles are like the rivers fast times and slow times and the river finally flows into the ocean, and that is our death. I enjoyed this book a lot and is now one of my favorite books. It must be good because it won the 1998 Carnegie medal (which is a medal for the best childrens book). It was a good book to me so I think reader age13-17 would enjoy it also.

save big bucks and a big ego boost

very well laid out, written for people (like me) who are willing to try, but need guidance to get started. The information is presented simply and straightforward, and I've found that with some You-tube videos to assist, I can fix this stuff. Of the six small gas engine powered lawn/garden implements that wouldn't start, three start on the first pull now. You've saved me big bucks, Mr. Hunn!

Great Book for Lawnmowers

This is an excellent book with lots of pictures on how to fix lawnmowers and diagnose their problems. I had gotten tired of taking mine to the shop every time the ethanol laden E10 fuel we have around here messed up the carburetor. The book is written for both novices and experienced handy-type people as well.

Purchased for my 10 year old "gear head" son. He is always plotting how to create a gokart, and can't wait till he owns a car. Gave him a broken mower, this book, and let him go to town with Dads tools. He has learned a lot.

Some good information...but...

This book mainly deals with things that are behind the scenes of what we see with our naked eye. The title is obviously in reference to the Bible, so subject matter in the book deals with spiritual things. One can find some good information here. But I have some problems with this book. I would say 20% of this book is Bible reference verses. No, I'm not offended by that. But I already have a Bible, so this was a bit much. There also is a section that is repeated in this book. I don't know if my copy is an anomaly or not, but obviously whoever did the editing shouldn't be in that line of business anymore. My final issue with this book is blanket statements that need more evidence to support a theory laid out by the author. For example, the author states that Pres. Reagan took the oath of office from the west wing of the Capitol, facing the obelisk. The author states that Reagan was sending the illuminati a very powerful message; the message being the antichrist is soon to be revealed. It just seems like if someone wants to, they can take any normal occurence in life and turn it into some occult meaning. In my opinion its statements like this that "muddy the waters" of very real occult happenings in our world. They turn true conspiracy theorists that expose the truth behind history, and make them look like "crackpots". In my opinion, read this book, but use a lot of discernment!

This is a good book overall. At first I wasn't impressed, but as I read on I was not disappointed. This book gives some info. on the Protestant Reformation, which many Christians today seem to know very little about. This book also covers many topics including some which many consider "conspiracy theories."

This is a collection of short stories written by high school students and what their life is like where they live. It also includes a brief explanation of what happened to them after the first publication of this book.

The fourth anthology compiled by Hanging Loose Magazine, this is a collection filled with stories that are true, down-to-earth, and heartfelt. The compilation is done well, and high school students seem well-represented by this small group of stories and poems.

Readers who like realistic fiction, poetry, and short stories will enjoy reading WHEN WE WERE COUNTRIES.
