Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most beloved animation directors. In 2005 he was awarded the Venice International Film Festival's Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement, and his Studio Ghibli received the festival's Osella Award for overall achievement in 2004. Miyazaki's films include Spirited Away, winner of the 2002 Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo, all of which have received great acclaim in the U.S. Miyazaki's other achievements include the highly regarded manga series Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Starting Point: 1979-1996, a collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs that chronicle his early career and the development of his theories of animation. If you read Starting Point, his collection of essays and interviews from 1979-1996, you'll love Turning Point. It follows the same format, showing translated articles from various interviews/essays/notes/sketches. It really helps to expand the understanding of the various films he's made and worked on. You get to read in his own words what he thinks of them, his inspirations, and low points, what he considered the best and the worst. There are also parts where he talks simply about his opinion on the state of the world, his interpretation of nature, films, animation, the conditions necessary to raise a child just to name a few.

In short, if you want to have a more robust understanding of Miyazaki Hayao and where he's coming from, buy this book. After you read Starting Point of course. This is a continuation of that and it shows his growth as a person and animator. He's not perfect. He admits he has faults, that he's not the best person. But he's honest and true to his vision and someone I greatly respect for sticking to his beliefs.

Not quite what I was hoping for from someone who enjoyed "Starting Point."

Really enjoyed this book but I had issues with so many interviews being similar. So you end up reading the same questions and same responses repeatedly. I also thought it was naive of Miyazaki to grossly generalize people on quite a few occasions in the interviews. In several parts he pretty much says Americans could never understand some aspect of cinema because their movies are all about blowing stuff up and that's what they all enjoy. I mean there are variations of this kind of thing where he takes American POP CULTURE (ACK!) and uses it to generalize 300 million people. He does throw around other generalizations about Japan, Europe etc as well. Anyhow, I did get a lot of what I was hoping for too. You get a sense of where he got certain ideas for movies and why he made certain decisions in directing a film a certain way. You can get some of these ideas about Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. Anyways, it was very much like the previous book, "Starting Point" but this one (Turning Point) was mostly interviews, some poems, and a few essays or they might've been speeches. No articles that I can remember. There were chunks of content that could've been left out without losing anything. As I said, content is repeated in a few places. Far worse in the first half of the book. Worth reading for people who want more insight into this masterful director with the understanding that there are a few awkward and unrelated comments to take with a grain of salt.

I still give it four stars because for good or bad, it's mostly what I wanted. And in the afterword, Miyazaki writes about how uncomfortable he was/is about the book. That he felt it misrepresented him or at least didn't identify fully with the book in some ways which is probably the nature of biographies. Views change and also generalizations fade when you're standing in front of someone shaking their hand. And besides, pretty much everyone is contrary at some point, and it's going to be especially obvious when interview after interview is documented like this.

Frantz Fanon (1925-61) was a Martinique-born black psychiatrist and anticolonialist intellectual; The Wretched of the Earth is considered by many to be one of the canonical books on the worldwide black liberation struggles of the 1960s. Within a Marxist framework, using a cutting and nonsentimental writing style, Fanon draws upon his horrific experiences working in Algeria during its war of independence against France. He addresses the role of violence in decolonization and the challenges of political organization and the class collisions and questions of cultural hegemony in the creation and maintenance of a new country's national consciousness. As Fanon eloquently writes, "[T]he unpreparedness of the educated classes, the lack of practical links between them and the mass of the people, their laziness, and, let it be said, their cowardice at the decisive moment of the struggle will give rise to tragic mishaps."

I was not sure in today's standards of this work would still be relevant. I hesitated to purchase, then waited even longer to actually read it. I found myself staring at a outline of exactly what is happening today. The same methods, same reactions, same consequences. The preface and foreword alone were worth the cost. If you look close enough you will find yourself within the pages, no matter where you are from.

Lost in translation...Farrington's version by comparison, is more credible in relating the ideas of Fanon.

After reading part of the Farrington translation, I bought this version to read on my Kindle app. Although it generally captures Fanon's ideas, I found the tone of the Philcox version to be effacing by comparison. It has a dumbed -down tone that detracts from the conciseness and forcefulness of Fanon's words. I recommend this book, in general, to those interested in social theory, philosophy, and history. For a stronger impression, I recommend he Farrington version, which I rate 5 stars....

Ought to be required reading in USA High Schools along with Blackstone and Montesquieu

It's difficult to read. i don't think that's from the translation. I think it wasn't proofed because of the circumstances surrounding it's writing. Mainly, it presents the reality of Western colonialism, which includes USA colonialism because that's what USA foreign policy is. While you're reading this you start remembering events and begin to see them as they actually occurred rather than how the MSM reported them, or in the case of the USA, if they were ever allowed to report on them. The book deals with Europe, France in particular and North Africa, primarily Algeria. You may recall that the USA picked up in Viet Nam after France abandoned it. Sacred JF Kennedy involved the USA in Africa as well. Europe is comprised of small States compared to the USA, so they went abroad to do things like the USA was able to do in the South with slavery and continues to do now domestically with the evolution of wage slavery into involuntary servitude via Social Security but continues to ruthlessly exploit humanity in otherwise independent States on the other side of earth for the sole benefit of USA business. So this book is about independence, in general, and literally, the only way it can happen.

About the Author
Michael Hetherington (BHlthSci, L.Ac, Dip RM, Yoga Teacher) is an acupuncturist, massage therapist, yoga teacher and author from Brisbane, Australia. He has been practicing yoga since 2000 and began formal studies in Oriental and complementary medicine in 2004. Michael's mission is to emphasize the healing process and assist people to connect to a deeper and more raw sense of self. He has a keen interest in Buddhist (insight) meditation, mind-body medicine, energetic anatomy, medicinal herbs and yoga nidra. Michael was always attracted to eastern philosophy and it was this interest that drew him to the teachings and practices of yoga and Oriental medicine at a young age. After traveling to China to teach English for a year, he returned to Australia in 2004 to begin studying Chinese medicine, remedial massage and practicing Oki-Do yoga (Japanese yoga) more seriously. The title sums it up well -For health and enlightenmment

What is self-muscle testing and its benefits? As the author states, "being able to test more subtler levels of existence".

I am constantly stressed out and losing sleep. I know I need to take better care of myself both physically and mentally. I read this book with an open mind and tried the self muscle testing techniques (which are very well outlined and include pictures) and felt a little more in tune with myself for lack of a better explanation.

One would have to have an open mind to appreciate the this book and to benefit from the techniques introduced. Assuming this is the case, it is worth the read. I recommend reading through it twice for a better understanding.

This was a good overview of muscle testing... It had quite a bit of info on how to make sure you are in a mind frame where it will work, and how to choose the questions, which is very important. It was well organized, and helpful without getting too technical. I'm glad I read it.

This is an excellent book that everyone should read and follow. It tells you exactly how to test yourself to see what supplements, medicines and food are needed by your body. Learn this and you will no longer buy a lot of supplements your body doesn't need.

Great All Inclusive Jewelry Book!

There is a great diversity of projects in this book! There's a little bit of everything and 60 projects to choose from. The photo project index at the front of the book is a great idea for seeing everything at once and selecting which project to do next. It's one of my favorite features of the book! The jewelry projects are broken down from beginner to advanced so if you're just starting out then the book will grow with you. If you're already advanced you'll find a lot of cute and unique ideas to try your skills out on.

The photos for each project are stellar and the directions are easy to follow. There's a general supply list at the very end of the book to help find the parts needed for the jewelry. There are also pages of technique tutorials broken down at the back of the book so if you don't know some terminology or how to do a certain step, it's probably spelled out it in this section. There are even images and tips to tackle the embroidery projects. This book is seriously all inclusive!

I really love the variety of projects in this book and that they can be completed in 30 minutes. Not to mention that I don't need outside sources to explain any of the jewelry making jargon thanks to the technique tutorials included in the book. Overall, I am super pleased with this book and would recommend it to any jewelry maker or jewelry maker newbie!

Love the project selection!

I'm a big fan of Beverly's blog Flamingo Toes, and I've always loved her jewelry tutorials she shares. This book is just the kind of awesomeness you'd expect from Bev! I love the idea that all of the crafts are 30 minutes are less because I'm not the kind of person willing to invest a ton of time in jewelry making. I'm also going to be honest - I'm really impressed with what she's come up with that you can do in that time frame. I'm an experienced crafter and these are very original! I can see both experienced and beginning crafters loving this book, and especially teenagers. There's something for everyone here.

Trendy jewelry and not intimidating!

I'm all about fast and easy crafts and to be honest when it comes to jewelry I can get a little intimidated.
This is such a great book because Beverly shows you how to make trendy jewelry anyone would want to wear! My favorite are the ones with the free templates for stitching!
I will definitely recommend this to my craft friends!
