Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs is a complete guide for amateur astronomers who are looking for a new challenge beyond astrophotography. The book provides a brief overview of the history and development of the spectroscope, then a short introduction to the theory of stellar spectra, including details on the necessary reference spectra required for instrument testing and spectral comparison. The various types of spectroscopes available to the amateur are then described. Later sections cover all aspects of setting up and using various types of commercially available and home-built spectroscopes, starting with basic transmission gratings and going through more complex models, all the way to the sophisticated Littrow design. The final part of the text is about practical spectroscope design and construction. This book uniquely brings together a collection of observing, analyzing, and processing hints and tips that will allow the amateur to build skills in preparing scientifically acceptable spectra data. It covers all aspects of designing, constructing, testing, calibrating, and using a spectroscope and enables the average amateur astronomer to successfully build and use a homemade spectroscope for a fraction of the current commercial cost. About the Author
Ken Harrison was born in Scotland where he trained as a mechanical engineer. He has been designing and building telescopes since the early 1960's and has built a series of spectroscopes for use on medium sized amateur telescopes. He was Section Director of the Astronomical Society of Victoria, Australia, Astrophotographic Section for ten years and past President of the Society. Harrison's university thesis (and his first publication) was Design and Construction of the Isaac Newton 98-inch Telescope (Strathclyde University, 1970). Since then he has published many articles on optical design, including "Blink Comparison" (BAA Journal Vol87, p94) and "Method of Radially Supporting Large Mirrors" (Vol87, p154). He has made contributions to the Astronomical Society of Victoria Newsletter and was for three years the Editor of the 'N'Daba' newsletter of the Natal Centre, Astronomical Society of Southern Africa.

Well worth having waited for!

This book is a welcome addition to the discipline's literature. It fills a real need for both theoretical and practical "how-to" information for amateur astronomers.

The writing, organization, editing, layout, color graphics and images are all excellent and reflect the high production values of Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series (Springer) publications.

The book is divided into three sections:

Part One: Introduction to Spectroscopy - Covers the history and theory of the field, including a good discussion of the different types of spectroscopes. Even if you have read this kind of background on the field many times before, you'll find that Ken's presentation and his inclusion of new details makes it fresh and interesting reading.

Part Two: Obtaining and Analyzing Spectra - Discusses how to setup and images with converging beam as well as reflection grating spectroscopes. It also discusses different cameras including DSLRs. There's a chapter that describes how to use VSpec for image processing. This section finishes up with a good discussion of different amateur spectroscope observing projects.

Part Three: Design and Construction - Frankly, my initial response when I thumbed through this section was that it wasn't for me, since I don't plan to ever build my own spectroscope. But, now, having read it through, I think that this section will be appreciated by almost everyone. Yes, there were places that it was a bit more technical than I was interested in. But, the majority of the material I found engaging and very helpful in filling in gaps in my knowledge. Even if you never plan to build your own spectroscope, I think you'll find this section interesting and informative.

One complaint I have about this book is that I frequently found parts that whet my appetite but then, instead of going into more detail, the author moved on to a different topic. This book could have been a lot longer! It's unfortunate that Ken was constrained by the publisher's page count and layout. However, that's one of the realities of book publishing these days. Clearly Ken has a lot more he can write about. Hopefully we'll see additional publications from him in the years to come.

You'll find spectra and images in the book from many of the "usual suspects" in the amateur astronomical community: Hansen, Leadbeater, Buil, Majden, Shelyak, Gavin, etc. Their images are a valuable addition to book, making it more accessible and informative. Thank you all of you for making your work available.

Ken is an active leader in the amateur astronomical spectroscopy community. He's also the designer of the the increasingly popular Spectra-L200 spectroscope kit. And he is also an active participant in several on-line communities, including the RSpec real-time spectroscopy forum where he regularly coaches both newcomers and more experienced users. Over the years, his postings and his direct emails have helped many of us deepen our understanding and overcome obstacles we encountered. This book is a further expression of his passion for spectroscopy and his desire to see more involvement in it by amateur astronomers.

Whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned expert, I think you'll enjoy and find "Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs" has a lot of valuable information.

I expect that this book will become a well-respected and enduring classic that appears on many of our bookshelves.

Exemplarily Good Source of Spectroscopy Information

This "source" is very complete, easy to understand, and well laid out for the amateur astronomer. Each section deals with different parts of what a beginning or advanced amateur astronomer needs to be aware of when learning about and building the different types of equipment used to see and record the light spectrum being imitated from stars - our own star (sun) included.

This book is AWESOME and a MUST for G1 and BW Transformers Fans.....

This book ROCKS. Before I get to the really good stuff, this book combines three excellent books previosly published but at an extremely good price! Only $25! VERY good buy! This is well worth the price.
Not only that but some additional narration text is inserted in certain parts to help the story transition better. These sections are when new Beast Warriors are being announced in The Gathering #1 and the Epilog sections at the end of The Gathering #2 are rewritten to indicate which faction camp the scene transitioned to.

This collection includes Beast Wars The Gathering, Ascending, and The Sourcebook with Glossary. The Glossary entries are renumbered to match the Omnibus page count. The book is very well done.

The coloring is also embellished, making everything look richer. There is an accurate order to read the profiles. I've made a G1/BW timeline utilizing the Glossary and profile entries. It's long; 65 pages. I posted it on a message board and fellow posters loved it.

Must read for all Beast Wars Fans..

I was a hardcore Beast Wars fan as a kid and saw every episode. I even purchased the whole Dvd Set of all 3 seasons plus the Beast Machines. I stumbled across this Comic at a Barnes and Noble. I flipped through the pages and was floored at all these additional story lines I never knew existed.. I knew I could get it a lot cheaper here and I ended up purchasing it through Amazon for half the price. This is basically a second story line to The Beast Wars that plugs in all those other Japanese toys you always saw at the toy store that were never in the Tv show like Razor Beast (the warthog). It gets confusing at first but it all connects at the end. Amazing artwork and colors! Brought me back to my childhood. This Omnibus has all 12 Comics put together, so you dont have to worry about finding all of them via Comic Store and/or ebay. For all you Beast Wars people out there, GET THIS! No joke..

One minus to this whole thing was the packaging.. The cover is laminated and came with some scuffs.. Wasnt a big deal since I did not purchase it for the cover.. Insides were perfect and that is all that matters.

Great for any Beast Wars fan!

This would be a great gift for any Beast Wars fan. Contrary to the television series, the stories included focus more on the side characters you only see portrayed as action figures. This gives a new breath of life for your figures, and because practically every character is represented in some way or form, the Beast Wars toy collector will find something new to like. It is particularly refreshing that the Japanese Beast Wars characters were given such a strong focus.

The actual plot itself is rather well written and it goes without saying Don Figueora's art is really fantastic. After finishing the story, you'll probably leaf through the individual pages, spotting minor little details and characters that you didn't catch the first time round.

The Beast Wars Sourcebook included is fun, but is infamous for having a good number of errors. Luckily a lot of them have been fixed, although the unfixable parts remain bad. Nevertheless, it is a fun encyclopedia, and a good addition to this collection. In fact, considering the price of this set, I'm more inclined to see the Sourcebook as icing on the cake. Overall, a highly recommended set.

This one is the perfect guide for Java programming

A great book for java programming

I get this book because i want to refresh my IT skills. The book is written in professional language and is very easy to understand for the Java newbies. It contains all basic tips that someone need when starting to work in Java. The book cover of everything that I need in Java,so it is a great book for my library and for any Java user!

IT Newbie Gets 94% on Strata. Study time 30 Days.

As a newbie to IT I needed something that would tell me if this was a viable option and I was not ready for the Comptia A+ test. (the most I've done is upgrade the ram on my home PC)

Enter the Strata. It's designed for people who want to prepare for the A+ exams.

This is how I got a 94% with no formal computer experience:

1. Signed up for the test 30 days out. The deadline gave me structure and momentum. (Buy your test voucher from a separate site like TotalSeminars.com for a discount)
2. I bought these Flash cards (http://tinyurl.com/q3ygkkw) to study the acronyms,
3. Read this book like a novel and completed the end of chapter tests
4. Completed One Practice Test (included on the CD)
5. Went back and reviewed the summaries of each chapter (instead of rereading the entire book)
6. Retook the Chapter Review questions.
7. On Test day I took the entire day off and studied lightly for the 4pm exam.
8. I showed up 30 mins early to sign in.
9. Went through the test once answering the questions as best I could.
10. Went through every question again changing a couple of the answers that I was unsure about.
-After going through it the 2nd time I knew I passed, but was pleasantly surprised to see the 94%.

That's it. Take what you like from this and leave the rest.

Super Basic and Dated Info. Book was Damaged

The audience for this book are people who have never had any experience with with setting up computer and trouble shooting them. If you even have a small amount of experience with basic IT or a technology enthusiast this book is a waste of your resources.

I do feel as though the content is well written. And the examples are good enough to provide a lay person with a basic idea of IT.

However, most of the information can be Googled. I'd recommend saving your money by just finding the Comptia IT fundamentals objectives (can be found on their site or the comptia sub reddit) and just going through it and jotting down your own notes.

What really bummed me out was that the binding on my book was completely removed from the spine or the text. The book did not have any damage so I assume it originated from the warehouse.

Bottom line, this book is dated and there should be a newer version covering the new Comptia IT fundamentals certification in the next few months. If you feel like you need a book, wait for that one. Otherwise, just Google.

Great beginning course in IT

I liked this book. It was written by IT professionals Scott Jernigan and Mike Meyers and, at over 500 pages cover to cover, it's a great short course if you want to know something about computers, printers, scanners and other modern high-tech gadgets, but you don't necessarily want to be an Information Technology (IT) expert. You'll learn about CPU's, RAM, Motherboards, power supplies, IP addresses, wireless networking, the Internet and system security. And that's only some of the stuff in this comprehensive book. Nothing in depth, of course, but enough to give you a solid foundation. Then, for those who want to test their IT knowledge, there's an official certification exam (Exam FCU-U41) sponsored by the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA). STRATA certification is useful if you're planning on entering the professional IT field as a salesman, user of IT equipment, or in preparation for more advanced CompTIA certifications such as PC, Networking, Security, or even Ethical Hacking. This book and the accompanying CD will definitely get you through the STRATA exam. At the very least, the STRATA certificate will demonstrate your level of interest and commitment to potential employers. And when it comes to landing a job in the current job market, every little bit counts. Read the book and take the exam. CompTIA Strata may open the door to a satisfying and lucrative career. I recommend CompTIA Strata Fundamentals to anyone interested in IT, from amateur tinkerer to budding professional. Oh, by the way. Awesome Read!!!

The reason for my rating is the material covers what was discussed in my classes. I like the way the manual has specific questions and gives an explanation as to why an answer was selected. It was easy to understand the questions as well as the answers. It helps to know "why" even if you know or don't understand the answer. Once an answer is explained it's much easier to retain the reasoning behind the question in my opinion. Understanding an answer is validation to the individual studying the material; although an individual does have the option of viewing answers after each practice test. I have several highlights of the test manual that were helpful. The user's guide to this course was organized; clarity of the questions was helpful, the outlined content of the manual was adequate and consistent, examples shown are useful and the content in the manual has made me feel more confident as I prepare for the NBCOT-COTA Exam.
