About the Author
Andrew J. Gordon, associate professor at the University of Houston, is an applied cultural anthropologist. His work in Belize includes directing an ethnographic field school that started in 2003, following earlier applied work in the country on the prevention of dengue fever. In addition to a PhD in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin, the author holds a master's degree in public health. Combining his expertise in these two areas, he has spent considerable time both in conducting ethnographic research in West Africa and the Dominican Republic and in consulting about problems related to health and development for the United States Agency for International Development, the Pan American Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, and The World Bank.

Taking his swing at the origins of World War II, conservative pundit Buchanan incorporates the subject into his warnings, expressed in several populist jeremiads (State of Emergency, 2006), of the decline of the West. Certainly World War I, with which Buchanan begins, was a catastrophe for Western civilization whose ramifications continue to be felt. Buchanan’s interpretation generally holds that British and American participation in both WWI and WWII was avoidable if British leaders had recognized that Germany was no threat to the vital interests of the British Empire. Banking his thesis on such supposed benevolence from Wilhelm II and Adolf Hitler, Buchanan criticizes various British policies of the 1920s and 1930s (who doesn’t?), and argues collaterally with Hitler’s statements disclaiming fundamental conflicts with Britain. The weakness in Buchanan’s line of thinking, of course, is that by 1939, Hitler’s international word was worthless; yet Buchanan hinges his case on what might have happened had Britain let Hitler go after Poland in 1939 as it had Czechoslovakia. Speculating a better future had the West permitted Nazi Germany a free hand in Eastern Europe, Buchanan cites the historical costs of Britain and France having at last drawn the line against aggression. About the Author
PATRICK J. BUCHANAN was a senior adviser to three American presidents; ran twice for the Republican presidential nomination, in 1992 and 1996; and was the Reform Party candidate in 2000. The author of nine other books, including the bestsellers Right from the Beginning; A Republic, Not an Empire; The Death of the West; State of Emergency; and Day of Reckoning, Buchanan is a syndicated columnist and founding member of three of America’s foremost public affairs shows: NBC’s The McLaughlin Group and CNN’s The Capital Gang and Crossfire. He is now a senior political analyst for MSNBC.

Misleading title, but great history

A more accurate title for this book would be something along the lines of, "Causes and Consequences of WWII, as Derived from Other Histories." In writing this book the author has taken the historical writings of about 200 different historical tomes and synthesized them into a single volume of a mere 420 pages (principle text only, and not including 75 pages of notes and bibliography). The book is an easy read, which is remarkable given the large number of references (sometimes conflicting) used by the author.

Here's why I love this book:

1. The writing is superb - I found the book easy to read, and hard to put down.

2. Mr. Buchanan lays blame for WWII (as well as WWI) where he believes blame should be laid, as very well supported by his numerous citations and quotations. Accordingly, Mr. Buchanan's conclusions are well supported.

3. Mr. Buchanan raises questions that any observant reader should also be raising, and then provides essentially immediate answers to the questions.

4. The writing is about as unbiased as possible. Mr. Buchanan offers alternative explanations for the actions of individuals, and lets the reader decide what is the best explanation.

This book should be read by anyone pondering the question of how and why WWII came about. It is not the end-all definitive tome on answering that question, but it does provide a critical piece to the puzzle, and perhaps more importantly, provides the reader with links (via the bibliography) for further study. (I purchased 9 books cited in the bibliography for my own further study.)

Notwithstanding the title and forward in this book, it is not just a rant against Churchill - it is also an excellent history of the motivations and events that lead up to WWII. This book should be read along with "Freedom Betrayed" (by Herbert Hoover, re WWII and FDR). If you read "Churchill, Hitler, and the Unnecessary War" and "Freedom Betrayed", you will be enlightened as to the so-called "Good War". WWII was not a war against the alleged tyranny of Nazi Germany. Rather, the European part of the war was brought about primarily by the personalities of Churchill, Neville Chamberlain, Hitler and Beck (the Polish leader in 1939). Stalin merely facilitated the European part of the war. To make it a truly World war, FDR did everything he could to antagonize Germany and Japan into attacking the U.S., with successful results (and the loss of 400,000 American lives). If you have any thoughts about WWII being the "good war", ask yourself these two questions: (i) If the British objective of WWII was to fight German aggression, why did they turn a blind eye towards similar Soviet aggression?; (ii) If the U.S. objective of WWII was to fight Japanese and German threats to the U.S., what was the real threat to the U.S. from Germany and Japan in June 1941? If you look for answers to these questions, you will find that WWII was not a war against tyranny, but rather a war of personalities.

I am a bit of an amateur historian, and have thus far primarily placed my study of the casus belli of WWII on investigating why FDR drug the U.S. into WWII (and to a lesser extent, why Britain gave Poland a guarantee in 1939 - but with no real satisfactory answer as to the latter question). This book provides at least one satisfactory answer as to why Britain decided to drag itself into WWII.

As I've always contended, the more one can read on a subject, the better one will be facilitated in forming a reasoned opinion thereon. This book should be part of any study on the casus belli of WWII.

A must book for any student of twentieth century history

Deserves 7 stars. This book does a very thoughtful analysis of diplomatic decisions, good and bad, leading up to WW I and WW II. It is an amazingly readable book that i did not want to put down. It is thoroughly documented. It is particularly good at analyzing both the strengths and weaknesses of Churchill. Highly recommended.

Will probably challenge your historical base programing

I got this copy of the book for a friend. I have read mine three times through. The best book I have found that has an realistic, accurate assessment behind the real causes of WW2 - both political and economic. This book peals off the onion skin of revision historian explanations to expose the realities of human cause and effect. In doing so, that reality might change your opinion concerning some of the major players involved in events of that time. Several times, during my first reading this book, I found my own historical baseline programming challenged - by this explanation of events that actually makes sense. Realizing that human activity (history) is a repeatable loop, it could explain a very possible undesirable future for our world - unless many re-looping trends are reversed. If you value the accuracy (therefore relevancy) of your personal opinions about this pivotal time in history, I highly recommend this book to expand and enhance your knowledge base.

It shows how to identify and distinguish between poisonous and hallucinogenic mushrooms (a vital skill). It also gives details on habitat. A useful reference guide. The only extra bit of advice I would give those thinking of ingesting hallucinogenic mushrooms is to always keep a sample in case something goes wrong so they can easily be identified. If in doubt don't pick. This book will certainly help reduces the confusion between similar looking psychotropic and poisonous mushrooms.

Decent and approachable, but short lived

Not a BAD book, but somewhat hard to follow when trying to look up specific properties. In general, it tends to avoid lists of possible properties in favor of highlighting a few and lightly talking about the rest in the text. A decent all round basic introduction, but not very usable as a reference work in my opinion... If you continue in this path, you probably won't keep the book around for long.

Interestingly, it includes a very short chapter on JavaScript... Though it's more a very tiny primer and indication that more can be learned than anything else. That's not really bad for this kind of book though, because JavaScript can fill books all its own, and if you don't mention it, a new student may never know to look.

Loved it.

This is a really cool book. It's useful for both newer content strategists who are looking for an overall roadmap of the process of a project, and also for more seasoned professionals who'd like to dip in to specific chapters for new ideas, tips, or tools. The tools that come with the book are awesome, too - I recently used the plan for the Objective Alignment Session in a large project kickoff, and the results were great.

I would definitely recommend this book to everyone working in content strategy (or even with content strategists). It's comprehensive, written in an easy, conversational tone, and chock full of great ideas.

Clear advice and guidance.

The Content Strategy Toolkit illustrates in easy to understand terms how to write better content, and how to get people to engage more with the content that you write.

The book takes you from the beginning to end of how to write content. From evaluating what is wrong with your original content, to how to structure your content so that it illustrates effectively the point you are trying to get across so that your content stands above others.

Each chapter is laid out with a clear objective, and the relevant tools that are required are shown, along with clear instructions on how to use the tools.

Meghan is a real world practitioner of content writing and so the skills and experience she imparts are taken from real world examples and examples that are proven to work This is shown in the way the book is written with the depth of understanding and the tools and techniques used.

This book will benefit a wide range of people from those who are seasoned content writers to those who are just setting out on writing content by introducing the skills required for content writing, and helping improve the skill set of existing content writers.

The skills I have gained from reading this book can also be turned to other areas of my profession, as the methods for evaluating and reasoning why content is not reaching it’s intended audience can be turned to pretty much any area where users have to interact with something. The toolkits can also be modified and used to help out too.

This book is a breath of fresh air. It’s not often a highly skilled content writer will impart their knowledge and ‘best secrets’ to help to improve the game of others. In this case, this is exactly what Meghan does. The easy to read style, and informal manner of the text kept me hungry and wanting to do more. It has pushed me to better my content writing skills, and also to be able to offer constructive criticism of others who ask my opinion.

The best part of this book are the templates that can be used, and by following these templates you will soon find yourself not only writing better content, but finding it easy, more structured, and a joy to do so. The guidelines that Meghan has are real world examples, and she has cited the sources and references so that you understand each of the guidelines and templates are not the thoughts of an individual, more they are the best available methods to help write content that delivers the results you want.

The book covers the many different ways of writing content to achieve different results and as such it is a very valuable resource for content writers, creatives, and even people who create things for others to use. I cannot recommend this book highly enough as it will not only change the way you write your content, but also the way in which you view the content written by others.

A practical, essential part of a content strategy bookshelf, and a strong orientation to anybody getting into the field

Meghan Casey's The Content Strategy Toolkit delivers what it promises: a well-structured, content-rich set of tools for content strategy practitioners both novice and advanced. I appreciate the practicality of this book. The author organizes her thoughts into a linear, logical flow, communicated in useful bullet-points, making it easy to browse and read.

Casey packs her book with a workshop full of well-crafted and useful content strategy tools, including a stakeholder matrix, project kick-off email, project team matrix, session plan and even a sample agenda.

In addition to these many tools, Casey offers clear directions for mapping out stakeholders processes, artifacts and deliverables; project management guidance, including timeline, material, reporting and rhythms and a strong overview of the content inventory, auditing, and mapping process.

Casey also pays close attention to the stakeholder interview process, including questions and documentation review process notes. These notes culminate in building a discovery inside workbook incorporating best practices from UX design, market research, and general business consulting.
While this may seem like an overwhelming amount of material to keep under control, Casey does a good job of aligning all the parts into a strategic framework that ties everything together, from the beginning of the process through the resulting outputs and actions.

Casey offers a nod to Sara Wachter-Boettcher’s book Content Everywhere in her overview of structured content and entering content into the CMS.
Her content types and components tend to be large, chunky, and high-level -- so it's at this level a high level introduction to modelling.

The book does have a tendency to focus on personal and in-person outputs and processes involving sticky notes and whiteboards best suited for traditional and co-located teams, and not much guidance is offered on how to apply the same processes in distributed environments. It may be that content strategy is a full-contact sport, but the nature of business is increasingly distributed, and content strategists should be prepared to embrace various kinds of collaboration.

As a content engineer, I also would have appreciated seeing more about content modeling. Casey does reference Rachel Lovinger’s article on the A List Apart website, but largely breezes over structured content and content modeling. Content strategists should embrace and understand content modeling as a core competency, even though content engineers should ultimately own and maintain the content model in collaboration with IT and development stakeholders. The content strategists who are equipped to natively understand and be able to contribute to content models will do their clients great service by contributing to content reuse structure.

Casey wraps up her book with a very helpful outline of content governance, editorial management, and other content maintenance topics. She also provides a list of all the tools used in the book, though I wish she had also included additional references to third-party materials and resources for students.

All in all, I give The Content Strategy Toolkit: Methods, Guidelines, and Templates for Getting Content Right five stars, because I believe it to be a practical, essential part of a content strategy bookshelf, and a strong orientation to anybody getting into the field. For other content strategy tools and templates, you might also check out the freely available tools from the Content Strategy Alliance. Those tools are helpful, but the context provided by Meghan Casey’s book is invaluable for any student of content strategy.

Rather dissapointed, actually

EE Doc Smith should have stopped at 6 books- he's added a 7th book that really doesn't fit in anywhere. Oh don't get me wrong- its a nice "stand alone" book in the "Lensman series" universe but it really doesn't quite feel right
